The one that hasnt is the train from Jodhpur to Madgoan (goa), it is a 36 hr train journey and Im worried we are gonna have no seat, any advice on how I can find out if we have a seat booked?

Your help would be much appreciated!!

what is your wl number? how much time do you have in india before this part of the trip? if you do not get a seat and you have a little time before you can likely buy from tourist quota when you arrive.

Hi liz,

Go to the rail web-site. There's a link to check your booking status. You will need to enter your PRN number (this is printed on the top right hand side of the ticket).

The web-site will return your details of the booking number and whether you are waitlisted (WL); reserved-against-cancellation (RAC) or in fact allocated a seat.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Which class did you book and how soon is your train? Generally, having a WL ticket gives you excellent chances of getting a seat. If you have booked a higher class and you are really worried, then I would suggest also booking SL class(if available).

Wow, if you're WL8, then I would be really shocked if you didn't get it. That's still a long time out and since it is SL there are good chances of people cancelling.

If you are still worried take solace that you can always break up your travel and go from Jodhpur to Mumbai and the mumbai to Goa. You will have greater availability of trains (assuming you have the extra day in your itenerary to play with) and some of them won't be booked up yet. Keep in mind the cancelation policy for SL class. It is only 20Rupees if you cancel before 48 hours of your reservation...

if you are in W/L-8 you are not allowed to enter in reservation copartment according to law. but as you are a foreigner people will help you out and you may get a seat. but you please do talk to the TT so that he will help you out.
cheers and have a great time.

Morning Liz,

If you are W/L8, and the train is not for another few weeks, you're guaranteed a seat.

Try the site again in another week or two and see what the changes are.

I had a W/L 25 with only a week to go before Xmas 2008. I got a seat on the last day.

Don't sweat it at this stage.

Well, now you come to mention it, it does seem kind of crazy! I guess we've all got used to it.

But... it works! And, if your ticket never actually gets confirmed you get your money back.

Let's look at this in an opposite way, if there were no monies paid but you could book a seat, what would stop people from booking 1001 seats and only cancel at the last minute ?

It would create havoc for those who want to make a firm booking.

As Nick points out, if you can't get a seat, you do get a refund of your monies.

IRCTC/Indian Railways - tricks, tips and magic

The IRCTC site - like the Indian Railways - is quirky but quite magical. And if you find out how to do things in there - miracles wait for you at every turn.

Whether or not you are booking a ticket - you can find the train route (all the stations and the stop time in each), availability (EXACTLY how many seats are still open including Waitlist or Reservation Against Cancellation queue number) and yup the tariff as well.

The "Show Route" "Show Availability" links just below the trains selection will do these tricks :LightBulb

Just noticed that the post is a MONTH old :dontgetit - so I assume you have checked your status and probably have a (near) confirmed ticket by now. If not, be cool; I concur with the general opinion of the other IMs - W/L 8 with 60 days to spare is almost a done deal [relax]

If you're still worried you could try a Tatkal reservation. Tatkal opens 5 days before date of journey. You need to pay a premium but you can snag a confirmed ticket (but here too the early bird gets the..)

Enjoy the trip cool:
