Hi there,

I've been going to India for many years but not so much recently. I just used to book my trains a few days before I wanted to head off somewhere. Is this still possible? Are tatkal tickets still easy to get?

I'm only going for a month this time so am trying to book trains in advance on the IRCTC site. I have managed to book trains from Delhi to Varanasi and want to go from Varanasi to Ajmer around 25 Feb. The direct train only goes on two days and is booked up the day I would like to go. So I have booked a train to Delhi and was going to get a train from Delhi to Ajmer but they're now all booked up (waitlists). I've never booked a waitlist train before and wouldn't feel comfortable risking it with a sleeper train but is it ok with a daytime train?

Another option is to just get a last minute ticket to Ajmer once I'm in Varanasi and cancel the Delhi ticket as it was pretty cheap. Is it possible there will be last minute tickets available on this train if it's sold out on IRCTC site?? I'm so confused by it all!!

Thanks

Marcia

In Varanasi you also get the Foreign Tourist Quota, in case this helps (besides getting it online also).

You can avail the FTQ tickets on IRCTC. However you will have to update your profile by entering your outside India phone number and provide an email id. You will also have to pay an one time charge for registering your number with IRCTC.

There are 8 seats in sleeper class in train 12987 leaving from Mughal Sarai at 9:45 and reaching Ajmer at 2:25.

Awesome Aarosh! Thanks SO much. I didn't know about this station. I've booked it! My first time in an AC carriage! I'm a bit sad to be away from the open windows and experience of SL carriage but happy to have a direct train!

Mughal Sarai is around 20 kms from Varanasi. Also in Ajmer, you can utilize the waiting room till dawn or if you are able to book the retiring room through www.irctc.co.in then you have a few hours of sleep, freshen up and the leave for Pushkar.
