I've never had to do this before (i've spent about 3 years travelling in India but not recently), and i wonder, do i really need to do this?

We'll be arriving in Kolkata end of November, will stay there for 3 or 4 days then get a train to Varanasi, there for three days then onto Agra, then buses thru Rajasthan if driver/car is too expensive.

For the trains mentioned above how soon do i have to get tickets. On arriving at those places, ie Kolkata & Varanasi, couldn't i buy my tickets with 2 or 3 days in advance, or do i have to book weeks in advance and get e tickets?

Advice pls.

It is best to book in advance, because if you wait till the last moment and don't get the tickets you are stuck. That's where touts and travel agencies come in and make a killing. Trains, still being the most favored way to travel, are very popular in India. How many days/weeks/months in advance you may need to book depends on the train/route. Hope this helps!

I'm doing 4 weeks in Rajasthan later this year and want to buy bus tickets on the website in advance. I have registered for an account but every time I try to make a purchase it just throws me back to the home page.

I've e mailed last December asking how far in advance tickets go on sale but not had a reply. I want to get from Udaipur to Jodhpur as there doesn't appear to be any convenient train service other than backtracking to Jaipur

Can anyone else advise on this and the query that they don't accept foreign cards

Bus tickets you can buy in Udaipur a day or so before you intend to go to Jodhpur.

An option could be to take a train from Abu Road to Jodhpur.
