I have booked a ticket on the Rajdhani to Delhi and unfortunately got middle berths for both the onward and return journey. Now I hate middle berths because its so cramped. Are there any provisions to change to an upper berth without cancelling the ticket?

No such provisions.
If berths are available, try booking afresh.
IF you do not mind loosing some money, book when the status moves to WL/RAC, and then wait for it to confirm and after chart preparation you might be awarded a LB/SLB (Subject to availability)

PS:- Would you mind telling me your age? I presume you are travelling alone!!

I am 22 and travelling with another person I recently met. Not sure why you ask, do upper berth travelers mostly travel alone lol? I actually prefer the upper berth because I am a light sleeper and never really get any sleep at night on a train and it helps if I can sit up and pass time when I get restless.

Is it not possible to mention the preferred berth during booking? I told the ticket counter staff to give me an upper berth but he still gave me a middle berth. Same thing happened last time too. Its like they don't entertain requests for particular berths.

As for your strategy to wait till it status moves to WL, its out of question since then I would get a side berth at best and being 6' tall, side berths are my worst nightmare.

Travellers above a particular age are eligible for confirmed lower berths (Subject to availability)
Berths are allotted randomly by system. However the PRS Clerk can tell from beforehand, if your preferred choice of berth is available for booking.

There is a section on the right hand panel of Reservation Requisition Form, where you can opt your preference of berth. If it is available, the system allocates.

However, the system allocates all the berths at one place in case there is multiple persons in a group.
