3A booking not available from IRCTC under foreign quota?

Hello,
An acquaintance of mine wanted to travel from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri and back. He managed to book tickets on AC 2 tier using the foreign tourist quota, paying the 50% inflated charge courtesy of the rule change in 2017.

I recommended that he book AC 3 tier to avoid paying the inflated charges, but he said that he can't see the option to book it on Irctc. This appears strange, as I can see 2 seats available on the tourist quota at http://www.indianrail.gov.in/enquiry...ntStations.jsp, for May 1, for which the person can travel.

Unfortunately, I cannot verify this on IRCTC, as in order to book under the foreign tourist quota, or to even see availability, one needs a foreign phone number.

Could someone with an IRCTC account with a foreign phone number please check if 3AC tickets are available for booking under the foreign tourist quota in Irctc, for May 1, on any train, but especially for Padatik express, from NJP to Sealdah (or Howrah)? If yes, the person has made a mistake, and if no, something seriously weird is happening.

PS: 50% Surcharge may seem unfair, but since locals can't even buy tickets on the route (very high waitlist), and will have to try their luck with Tatkal, the surcharge seems worthwhile and fair.

I have a question on the booking limit of 6 journeys on IRCTC per month. Does the limit include cancellations? I have booked 4 tickets already (2 each way) and want to move them by one day. So, essentially cancel all 4 journeys and book 4 journeys all over again.

I believe that even if you cancel, you still have used up 4 of your monthly allowance. This was what another poster stated, so I can't speak from personal experience.
Can you get another person in your party to "register", with new email and phone, that way you could book extra tickets...?

Thanks, I guess I will just stick to the current plan then. To include cancellations in the limit seems kind of ridiculous. Actually, the limit itself is restrctive gvien that plenty of people (Indians) need to travel at least three times a month, which even with direct journeys, would need six journeys.

I think Indian residents can book up to twelve tickets per month, if they register their identity (aadhar card) with the train website.
Sadly, all the effort seems to be geared towards preventing fraud by ticket touts, and not towards making ticket purchase an easy and smooth transaction.

I guess we know just how easy it still is to buy tickets from a tout in India...

The limit is only for booking tickets online. One can purchase as many tickets as one wants from the counter. However for foreign tourists that is a problem.

I am.planning to use cleartrip to book a few tickets using my irctc username ( was last used in 2009)

Will this be a problem ?

Another problem is that I do not have access to the Indian mobile number that I used when I set up the account in 2009( or for that matter any mobile number )

I think it would be better to enroll again with your foreign mobile number. IRCTC now allows non Indian mobile numbers to be registered.

I think old accounts no longer work, at least for foreigners... If you registered as an Indian citizen, things might be different?

Try to book and see if things work, you should be able to print your e-tickets from cleartrip without need of your old phone number.

I seem to remember that you need to enter an IRCTC password as well as your "user name"...

If it does not work, do as aarosh suggests, and register a new account with UK mobile number and new email address.

Did a test booking for a cheap ticket and it works even now. ( last ticket booked in 2009)

I managed to find my irctc password from an old email.

My address which came up is an old address ( in the UK)

I wonder if the address is from cleartrip or from irctc ???

Another 2 questions

1. I am travelling with Mrs. ukdoctor . Is it 6 bookings or 6 tickets per month ?

2. I have two first names and a surname

The booking system does not seem to accept all the names

For example if my name is.

First name : XXXXX YYYYY
Surname. : ZZZZZ

Is it okay to put my first name as XY
Surname : ZZZZZ

One can book 6 tickets per calendar month.

It would be better to put the name as XXXXX ZZZZZ. Since it is a e-ticket you might have to show an photo id proof. Your passport would have your name as XXXXX ZZZZZ (along with YYYYY).

I believe it is six journeys, each having at most six passengers. I am not completely clear as to whether cancellations count toward this limit.

I meant 6 set of tickets. As far as I know cancellations are counted toward the limit.

Problem is that my surname itself has 13 characters. As far as i can see is'nt there a 15 Character limit ??

I managed to find.my last ticket I booked in 2009 and I think i did the same with intials and surname.

Not sure if anyone checked the id that time though..
