Hello

I have read all the stuff on wait lists and RAC but I'm still confused about 1st class... (Most expensive fares)

If it's a wait list (2) on clear trip and I buy tickets am I guaranteed a place on the train or must it be RAC?

Good question but I do not think there would be RAC side seats in 1 AC.

No RAC in 1st class (1A)

Also no guarantees of even a WL1 getting confirmed.

It's the trickiest class to predict when it comes to waitlisted tickets.

If you give us the train number, boarding station and destination, as well as date of travel, I'll do a longer reply explaining in detail.

There isn't, but there could be if the railways wanted to, there is RAC in the old non AC First Class (FC), but I can imagine the outrage if RAC was introduced to 1A, especially as 1A has almost always direct competition with the cheaper airlines.

I am on the Darjeeling mail train in first class but have a friend wanting to get on same train.... Monday 24th feb

Also I'm wait listed on a Mumbai to Goa train in March...

I guess the other question would be, is it likely to access tickets once in India on the 21st for the 24th trains as cleartrip is showing all trains wait listed now... Or could our guesthouse access tickets now?

Sorry that's from Kolkata to NJP

Reety, please ask your waitlist question in http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...e-only-t56727/ in the format mentioned at the top.

What Mumbai-Goa train? date?

There's a trick can be used to find extra availability on the Darjeeling Mail, but I think it only works for Sleeper Class, I'll just check.

I understand the need to keep the forum tidy and merge similar threads, but 1A waitlisted tickets confirmation can sometimes seem to follow confusing paths.

It may be better to let this thread run, then later add it to the 'All about First Class AC' thread.

Thanks I've read through that and it just confuses the hell out of me still!

I guess I just want a simple answer to what it means to but a wait list ticket in 1st class AC? Is that a "no guarantee you'll get on train" or do you get some sort of priority being 1st class...

There are only a limited number of seats in 1st class. If all the tickets are booked then the waitlist begins. If an already confirmed passenger cancels the ticket the first person in the waitlist gets a confirmed seat. If none of the passengers cancel their ticket then you remain in waitlist and can not travel on the train.

My friend would like to get on either the Darjeeling mail or Padatik Express... Is there a trick to get tickets or if they are wait listed the train is full ? (Or is it clear trips quota is full?)

As for Mumbai / Goa I am wait listed for first class AC on the konkan kanya express for 24th march (I have a confirmed 2nd class which I will cancel if I can get first class). I am WL 1

If both the DJ Mail and the Padatik have the same waitlist position, Padatik is a better bet as it has more 1AC seats. There is no Cleartrip quota, Cleartrip accesses the same seat of seats that the official railway website (IRCTC) and people booking at reservation offices get.

WL 1 on the Konkan Kanya with over a month to go is fairly promising.

If your first priority on this route is travelling 1AC, why not book on the Mandovi Express instead of the Konkan Kanya? It has seats available on both 24th and 25th March.

The Darjeeling Mail trick only works with SL and 3A.

There's 18 x 1A berths on the Darjeeling Mail, and only 8 go on sale to the general public, a massive 10 (by normal train standards) are held back for the HO quota, this is like an emergency quota, but it's hard to access it, you have to go to the originating station and apply (with a good reason) to get on to the quota.

The HO quota is used by VIP wannabees to access last minute tickets, often politicians, and to have a number as high as 10 would indicate they use it a lot.

Any HO quota remaining a few hours before the train departs are then used to reduce the waitlist, but given that these politicians and their companions can turn up at the last minute, it's very difficult to predict if a waitlisted ticket will get confirmed, and given that only 8 humans hold tickets, the chances of those cancelling are slim.

The other train you mention (Padatik Exp) is an interesting train, 22 x 1A places sold ahead of time (so more chances of cancellations), and still 10 x HO quota berths.

For a number of reasons, the Padatic Exp. has more chance of waitlisted tickets getting confirmed, though a low waitlist number (4 or below) should get confirmed on both trains.

If I absolutely had to get to New Jalpaiguri, I'd choose the Padatic.
