Indian Jews. Some historical perspectives now. Speaking of Jews, what comes to my mind is the surprising mention of them by swami vivekanada of their persecution and refuge in India in his famous Chicago speech ( circa1893). Fast forward to 1.30 to hear this. Thanks to technology today we can still hear his voice on youtube.Hindus had readily embraced Jewish refugees and much later Iran’s Zorastrians who were wiped out by the Turk arab invaders among others.

He didn’t say anything about the persecution and genocide of hindus in the hands of muslim mauraders that has been going on for centuries there, maybe because he was worried of retribution as they still have had some hold at that time in Bengal and elsewhere.

The link is for the name of the thread where that post appeared. I don't think the link has any connection to Hitler.

Hey, it appears that I started that thread!

I cannot be sure, but I don't remember doing so at all, and the title does not seem to be something that I would do. Maybe it was spun off by a mod from another thread and the title given. Just clarifying and guessing both. A hint in the first line of post 43 there.. ("this is not a CHurchill thread)
.

The wanderers who found home

Quote:
What does the Bollywood actor Aditya Roy Kapur (and his brothers) have in common with the influential London-based sculptor Anish Kapoor?
Not just their city of birth and a Punjabi surname, but also Jewish ancestry -both their mothers are Jewish. The Mumbaiborn 63-year-old Kapoor's mother was a Baghdadi Jew whose father was the hazan (cantor) of Pune's Lal Deval, the Ohel David Synagogue. Roy Kapur's mother, Salome Roy Kapur (nee Aaron), an accomplished dancer, choreographer and former model, is Bene Israel. Her parents, Sam and Ruby Aaron were the first certified ballroom dancers in India.

The Lal Deval, literally `red temple', where Kapoor's grandfather once led the prayers, is the largest synagogue in Asia outside Israel. Commissioned by David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jewish trader and philanthropist, it was completed in 1867.The towering building is a prominent remnant of Baghdadi Jews, a mercantile community that migrated to India in the 18th century -from Baghdad and other parts of West Asia, which settled down in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Although the Sassoon family and other Baghdadi Jews migrated to Englishspeaking countries after 1947, their clout remains etched in the many architectural landmarks of Mumbai, and also Pune, which was the second capital of Bombay Presidency. They have been documented in a guidebook for cultural tourists, Jewish Heritage of the Deccan (Jaico, September 2017), by Pune-based research scholar Pushkar Sohoni and American historian Kenneth X Robbins. In the book, which focuses on built heritage, the authors write, “The contributions of the Sassoon family to the urban culture and fabric of Mumbai cannot be underestimated.“ The Knesset Eliyahoo and Magen David synagogues, the Prince of Wales statue on a horse from which Kala Ghoda Square derives its name, David Sassoon Library and Sassoon Docks are just some among many contributions, others being statues, institutions and hospitals. The Sassoons even contributed money for the construction of Gateway of India.

Jewish Heritage of the Deccan not only plots the Baghdadi Jewish structures in their historical context, describing their architecture and illustrating them with photographs (by Surendra Kumar), but it does the same for Bene Israel monuments. This list includes the Shaare Harahamim (Gate of Mercy) Synagogue, which was the first Jewish place of worship in Mumbai, built by Samaji Hasaji Divekar in 1796; the recently renovated Magen Aboth Synagogue in Alibag (“a fine example of Bene Israel religious architecture“); the still-in-use Beth El Synagogue in Revadanda; and the Navgaon Cemetry, where a 20th-century memorial is dedicated to the ancestors of the Bene Israel.

Although no material evidence exists to support the claim, the Bene Israel (“children of God“) believe that their ancestors were seven men and seven women who survived a shipwreck off the Konkan coast and took refuge in Navagaon, 2,200 years ago. The community assimilated in the Konkan (and later in other towns in the Deccan) by adopting the local language, food, dress and other customs. “Intercaste marriages with the local inhabitants accounts for the physical resemblance to their neighbours,“ writes city-based retired medical doctor Irene Judah in Evolution of the Bene Israels and their Synagogues in the Konkan (Vishwakarma Publications, January 2017). In the book, Judah, a Bene Israel herself, has pieced together oral accounts, references and anecdotes, to chart out a timeline of her community.
