The supply of Alphonso mangoes has taken a hit because of the untimely rain and dip in minimum temperature. Cultivators of this popular mango variety are suffering massive losses and the fruit is likely to be a tad too expensive for the 'aam aadmi'.
"The unprecedented rain in March and April led to almost 80% damage to the mango crop at our farms in Vengurla. Because of the rain and hail, the pea-sized fruit in its early stages dropped from trees in large numbers. Most of the 20% mangoes left are now turning yellow as they are not ripening as they should," said Nilraj Lokegaonkar, a mango cultivator.
