Generally, if you go for south indian food, it works out really really cheap. The "Saravana bhavan" in connaught place is very good and cheap.

* 'Pot-Pouri' - mostly continental...try their kebab platter Or consider 'Nizams' (Spicy Indian Fud) - both located in Connaught Place, Delhi
* Bread of Life Bakery and Restaurant,Varanasi - This has gr8 breakfast menu...dunno much abut lunch though...
* Haifa, Varanasi

Note: Dont fall for 'cheap' food in India, as you might get sick eating 'cheap' food available in many roadside joints. Wherever u eat, just make sure its hygenic.

If you mean cheap cheap then try the little place opposite the Metropole Hotel, on Paharganj Delhi don't be put off by the looks this place serves up delicious North Indian veggie fare like Rajma (red bean curry), Panner Butter Masala (Local cheese curry), Aloo palak (spiced Spinach with potato) and the like, the Rotis are awesome as are the south india parothas, ask the Nepali chef what todays special is MMMmmmm!
The most expensive dish is 35 rps here, most main courses are around 15-20 rps and rotis are 1 rp
If you hang a right at the Metropole then the first left You'll find an upstairs restaurant Called the Mhahotra (bad spelling) this place does a variaty of western chinese and Indian dishes a good plate of Chicken tikka will set you back around 125 rps veggie dishes are around 50-75rps,soups for 30-40rps
On Janpath close to Connaught place, try the Saravar Bhavan, delicious south India fare a big thali will cost you 50rps and you will completely replenished after one of these. They also do good dosa idlis and loads more besides!
if you fancy it a Subway sandwich won't break the budget
Again on Paharganj try the Sonu Chathouse for decent North/South Indian fare at affordable prices, masala dosa 25rps, idli sambar 15rps!! Or just up from that there's the diamond cafe they also do decent food at affordable prices.
The Everest Cafe next to the Star Paradise Hotel does good momos fresh bread and cakes and their main meals weren't so expensive at around 100rps
The Madan Cafe seems to have a good rep for breakfast though I've never eaten there myself!!
Much of the street food is very tasty and cheap, but perhaps your stomach may need a little training for that, but if you think you can handle it The chicken and mutton kebabs are tasty and cheap 20 rps for a mutton kebab, 65 rps for half a Tandoori Chicken, many places do ommelete for around 10 rps and there are a glut of guys doing fried potatoes for 10 rps a portion!! And chai is only 3-5 rps (my favourite isopposite the Metropole Hotel, just a solitary stall and a few nailed together benches but the chai is Mmm )
I hope that's of some help

Hi aahlberg,
Please have a look here, it is a nice thread started by Natasha. It will help you to select one when you are in Kolkata.

Apart from these there are several options in Kolkata but depends upon the location where you are going to stay. Enjoy !!!!
