By popular demand ... a Varanasi meetup thread.
It's always darkest before it goes completely black.

Let's have a meet-up sometime between 8th and 19th May, I'll be in town then I suggest starting out at Burger King next to the Taj, their sattu paratha is amazing. Then we can head to the less frequented ghats towards the east end. Who's game?

I won't be there until august, but was surprised to see you recommend something from Burger King. Is it completely different from US Burger King? It would have to be, I guess...

What's saggy paratha, and what's so good about theirs? Very curious....

@francesb: lol. Yes, VERY different from the US chain. It's not a franchisee. The downstairs bit is pretty much a fast food takeaway/stand-and-eat place, while the upstairs section is a regular restaurant. The SATTU paratha is made with gram-stuffed flour, is spicy as they come, and eaten with an aubergine-tomato mash and raw onions. It's a distant cousin of baati-chokha, another Banarsi specialty that can't really be done justice to in description, only by eating

@triguna: Actually, north of Dasashwamedh, the Ganga tilts sharply eastward, and by east-end ghats I mean the ones at the northern tip, such as Rajghat. Let's have a meet-up Friday the 13th(!) or sometime over the weekend anyway, hopefully that's enough time for some more to join in, and Panchaganga is fine by me.

But let other suggestions roll in.

SATTU, yes. Stupid iPad has an extremely aggressive auto-correct,and I neglected to reread.

Meetup in Varanasi End of July-August

I'll be in Varanasi for a month starting the last week of July. If you're in town at that time I would be happy to meet up and see the sights!

And I'm honestly excited about potential monsoon weather. It rained like crazy when I was there for Shivaratri and it was beautiful.

I will be there probably August 7-9. I might have time for a meetup if there's interest.

Is anyone in Varanasi now?
I'll probably be here for 2 weeks, and I'd love a meet-up. It's terribly empty here :O
