Come to India, get a SIM card from the governemnt! What's not to like?

Gift Kit Consisting Of Sim Card And Other Important Items For Tourists Arriving On E-Visa

"....the central government has decided to provide a gift package containing SIM card, Maps, booklets, and a CD containing information on various Tourist Destinations in India. The kit will also provide Do’s and Don’ts while traveling across India, details regarding whom to contact in case of emergency among other things. The package will be given to all the people who arrive at the 16 airports listed by the tourism ministry under this scheme."

We will see if this will actually happen. Has anyone heard when this starts? I'm landing in Chennai with an e-visa later this month.

Paranoia would prevent me from any Government giving me a free card which can track my calls, location and who knows what the hell else these cards can do with todays technology. I would never put that sin card in my phone!!!!

Suckers beware!

Instead you use a private company's sim that rolls over to any request from the gov. At last report the US gov. has collected vast hordes of such that it doesn't know what to do with. Big data means big noise. Its not just a shortage of information but also a shortage of analysis (that according to a recent thesis I was given to read)..

Since nothing is free, my concern would be that the SIM might offer special rates consistent with what most foreigners think is reasonable.

This is a superb idea (although the free coaster, otherwise known as a CD is unlikely to be of much use to most) and it remains to be seen when and if it actually happens.

Waiting on the news...

This is nice, but a better gift would be to make it easier to book trains abroad.

Gift kits for E-Visa tourists

None of the article mentions how soon this will happen. I doubt it will be live in February already
