Centre To Tap Coastal Tourism In Gujarat

The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Ms. Bhavnaben Chikhaliya, has said the long coastline of Gujarat should be developed for attracting tourists, including foreigners. “My Ministry will look into the development of coastal tourism in the State. Madhupur, Veraval and Jafrabad coastal routes are being tapped in this regard”, Ms. Chikhaliya told PTI. On Girnar in Saurashtra, which attracts a large number of domestic tourists, including pilgrims, the Minister said she favoured construction of a ropeway at the mountain. “There are many ropeways in different parts of the country and abroad from where no complaints about environment degradation have been received so far”, she said.

The construction of ropeway at Girnar was stalled for more than past 12 years due to opposition from several non-governmental organisations and political leaders. The ropeway at Girnar, which is also the only abode of Asiatic lions in the world, is necessary for the development of the area, Ms. Chikhaliya said.
