Hello everyone,
I am in early stages of putting together my second trip to India.
First one was easy since it was with a small group and organized by a travel agency. I went to see “a golden triangle” – New Delhi, Agra, Jaypur and back to New Delhi. The last section from Jaypur to Delhi was done by a train and the rest by a bus.

This time (February 2006) I would like to go on my own and have hard time on deciding my itinerary.
I will be flying from Europe to Mumbai or Chennai and would like to fly back home from the same place as arrival airport to minimize on my air transportation cost.
Depending where I start here is my first projected itinerary:
Mumbai, Sholapur, Hyderabad, Kurnool, Bangalore, Mysore, Kannur, Mangalore, Panaji and back to Mumbai. Total is around 2650 km.
If I start from Chennai - I will be heading to Mamallapuram, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Kollam, Kochi, Mangalore, Panaji, Mysore, Bangalore, Chittoor, Kanchpuram and back to starting point in Chennai. Total distance here is around 2670 km.
In either case I would spend 14 days traveling and covering not more the 200 km per day. Since my travel experience in Southern India equals zero, I will certainly appreciate all comments, criticism and suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any and every advice,
Guniek

It's doable, but it sounds exhausting. Changing locations is generally an all day (or all night) undertaking, even for going 200 KM. It's not as if you can hop in your car and be there in two hours. Personally, I'd want to give this routing at least four weeks. Otherwise you're going to feel like you're spending all your time on or waiting for buses and trains. Whew.

Clarification

I would like to add to my previous post that I will be renting a car with a driver. I think that 200 km per day is not excessive, is it?

Guniek, you don't necessarily have to arrive and depart at the same airport. If you book both flights at the same time and with the same airline, it should count as a return ticket, and you should not get charged the one way fares. At least it was that way when I booked last year with Emirates
