Hello

I'm flying back home from Delhi in a week and looking for a place to spend New year's eve.
Where could I find a company if like minded backpackers this time of the year?

I was thinking of going to Rishikesh for new year eve. Is it a good idea?

Right now I'm in Puri, Orissa, but flying back home from Delhi on 7/1.

Suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks, Danny
I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad

What's your mind like??

Maybe Pushkar if you like to party with legal alternative substances.

And Pushkar has a big backpacker population that stay for awhile. Some for months. And it's a really pretty, unique place, unlike anywhere I saw in India.

The advantage in Rishikesh is that some alcohol can be imbibed too in high bank dives! Legal alternative substances available too; only the synthetic ones may not have such use unless preferred!

I've never been to Rishikesh so don't know. I just imagine it as a kind of Hollywood, Las Vegas kind of place for spirituality ever since the Beatles went there and popularized it. Full of fake, money oriented gurus, conning the gullible westerners. I have no desire to visit there.

Quite exaggerated imagination; Gangama is bigger than Beatles for one and Rishikesh is a haven for Ganga and also to stay backpacker style in the high bank guest houses! In my one visit there I came across some foreigners,,( For Indians it's a given) who had got the ashes of a relative in a urn to throw it in the Ganga! A visit to the desolate Beatles ashram is also rewarding for the architecture of the eco huts they constructed! Another advantage is white water rafting (high standard) at cheapest prices! As also to experience river beaches!

And agree the Ganga is bigger than the Beatles. But I'm 1000% sure Rishikesh is full of shysters!!

And isn't New Years a little cold. Especially for rafting.

My advice is go for Pushkar as an Israeli. If your more into a party. Which is New Years no?

Ajmer for New Years? Or even Jaipur?

Why not suggest Baghdad.

Thank you both for suggestions.

Actually I've been to both of the places 5 months ago, at the beginning of the trip.

My concern with Rishikesh is that it would be empty this time of the year. Isn't it complete off season? I was thinking of basing in Laxman, meet nice people, do some yoga and chill out. I really don't want to be on my own, Puri was enough.
BTW, Ananda, it's nothing like you think it is, I found it much more "real" than Pushkar.

I was thinking about Pushkar as well, but it's bit less appealing to me. Too many people whose main interest is to get high from morning till night, Israelis included. It also quite noisy and busy with vendors and pushers. But if its the best place for NY I'll be there.

I never said Pushkar was "real". Just a pretty place where your sure to meet other travelers. Especially for New Years. And Delhi should have a lot going on New Years. Might not be as easy meeting up with others as Pushkar though. Maybe start a thread here for a Delhi New Year get together? Otherwise, Pushkar is the only place I can think of where your sure to meet other backpackers easily close to Delhi for New Years if you want to party like a New Years celebration. If you want yoga for New Years, then look someplace else.

I just assumed that since you're so negative about Rishikesh I thought you think the opposite about Pushkar .
Your reasoning about Pushkar make a lot of sense. I might actually go there. As for Delhi.. I try to spend as little time as possible there. Really don't like it.

If anyone has more suggestions or tips, please share

The two places are different, but with the year end rush, even more so. Pushkar, simply because it's in the plains and the weather in Jaipur area (where I live) is the best we ever get, will be crowded on NYE. If you need peace and quiet, go to Rishikesh. If you want parties, Pushkar.

I want party, happy people around me. Yoga I can do on my own. And the weather point is important as well of course. So guess it's going to be Pushkar..

Thank you all for help!
