Hello All,

My wife and I (both mid 30's) will be finishing up an Intrepid Travel trip in Varanasi on the 10th of Oct. Trip 'ends' with checkout of hotel by noon.

My question is what is the best way, not necessarily the quickest, but best way (bang for buck) to get from Varanasi to Chandigarh. It's my understanding that there are no direct flights from Varanasi to Chandigarh.

Our budget is approx 30-$100 per person.

We will have traveled to Varanasi on an overnight train two nights before and don't look to a train back to delhi as the most enjoyable way. (Please correct me if I am wrong.)

We fly out of Delhi on the 14th of Oct. Work requires me to spend at least a full day and a half in Chandigarh.

So leaving Varanasi on the 10th, having to spend at least a day and a half in Chandigarh then flying out of Delhi on the 14th at 5:40 pm.

What are my best options for enjoying more (or less of course, if less is more) of India at a not so harried pace within this time frame?

We will have spent, I believe, enough time in Delhi...not sure of course.

Both my wife and I have traveled, Brazil, China, Thailand, Egypt...both solo and in groups.

Here is our tour itinerary leading up to Varanasi. (air condition car and train)

Oct 2 - Land in Dehli, spend night. (Bajaj Homestay)
Oct3,4 - Delhi with Intrepid Travel (Metro Heights Hotel)
Oct 5 - Jaipur
Oct6 - Jaipur
Oct7 - drive to Agra via Fatehpur Sikr
Oct 8 - taj Mahal and Agra Fort (overnight train to Varanasi)
Oct 9 - Varanasi
Oct 10 - leave varanasi? 12noon

Thanks everyone. I'm aware of and prepared for this 'schedule' to fly out the window at any moment.

Looking forward to you response. - jax

Varanasi to Chandigarh, then back to Delhi after spending at least a day and a half in Chandigarh??? Not an enviable schedule. I don't think there's any way to do it except by flying (on a carpet or otherwise).

I checked both the Jet Airways and the Indian Airlines websites, and unfortunatley there's only one flight per day on each airline between Varanasi and Delhi and one per day between Delhi and Chandigarh, and the the flight from Delhi to Chandigarh leaves before the flight from Varanasi to Delhi gets in (or before it even departs from Varansi for that matter). You could fly to Delhi on the 10th, then fly to Chandigarh the next day and be there by about 2:00 p.m. on the 11th and would have time to fit in your day and a half in Chandigarh before you have to get back to Delhi on the 14th.

dzi, thanks for that. Man, one flight from Varanasi to Delhi..hmm, that we'll have to make. Then I was thinking of a train up to Chandigarh..if I remember correctly it's a 4 hour train...I'll have to check train times between Delhi and Chandigarh..man, having to be someplace is no fun.

But it's looking like another night stay in delhi on both sides of chandigarh..in delhi on 10th, spend night, out on 11, chandigarh on 11, and 12, leave chandigarh on 13th, spend night in delhi and leave next day...hmm

I havn't checked the Varanasi - Delhi flights, but there must be one that would allow you to catch the following train and avoid staying in Delhi.

Train 2005 departs New Delhi daily at 17:15 and gets to Chandigarh at 20:20.

Air Con Chair Car = Rs 415

jax,

I suggest you leave Varanasi on Oct. 9th night by the 2317 Akhal Takht Express. This leaves Varanasi Jn. at 21=25 every Sun. and Wed.; and October 9 happens to be a Sunday. You'll reach Ambala at 13=45 on Oct. 10. From Ambala to Chandigarh you can very easily travel by bus/taxi/train.

You have to book you ticket NOW, as there's already a WL for October 9. However, its WL -1 at the moment, so you do have a good chance.

Shimla, great find! I want to see how much of Varanasi we'll be able to take. I understand the crowds can be overwhelming and everything a bit touristy but we will see. The city and it's history are fascinating..I don't know if I could get in that morning and then leave the same night? Maybe..if I was traveling alone possibly, but two long train trips one night after another might but the wife on uneasy street..and that can be worse than any crowd in any country. So we shall see.

Thank you for your thinking though..that is exactly the kind of option I was talking about.
