This is my first trip to India. I'll be travelling with 4 other women. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for us. We are leaving 2/1/06. Our itinerary is looking like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Delhi (buy some Salwar Kameeze, aclimate)
Day 2-3: Go to Agra (train? Taxi? Bus?) We need to be here by 2/2 because the Taj is closed on Fridays!!
Day 4-6: Jaipur (shopping, meeting someone)
Day 7: Johdpur (we are meeting some people here)
Day 9-12: Jaisalmer for the Desert Festival
Day 13-15:??? We need to be back in Dehli by the 15th.

Is this crazy? What is the best way to travel between these cities. Has anyone been in Jaisalmer for the Desert Festival? We are on a budget, do we need a guide? Do I need to pre-book anything?

So many questions. I'd appreciate anything you've got.

1. You can leave for Jaipur on day 3 evening by train and reach late night.

2. You can leave for Jodhpur on day 6 evening by train and reach late night.

3. Spend days 13 to 15 at Delhi, there's far more to this city than just a day's acclimatisation !
Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop !

Friends of mine did 4 cities (Delhi, Jaipr, Ranthambore and Agra - in that order) in 7 days. but they had a car and driver. Your schedule is feasible

If you are planning to take trains and buses, you may want to research their schedules and ticket availability carefully before you get there.

Thanks for your replies. I think I will try and prebook our 1st hotel in Dehli and also maybe the train trip to Agra since we get there in the evening and the Agra train leaves at 6am. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get same day train tickets? Say, if we got into Agra in the morning and decided to try and get a train to Jaipur that evening

I would think about renting a car and driver

Keeping 5 people together is going to be alot easier. Plus your driver will be your guide. I would contact Namaste tours. www.namasteindiatours.com. They are in Delhi. I don't think for five it would be that much more expensive than a train unless you were going at an inexpensive class. You could all fit in an Ambassador if you luggage was reasonable.

Not worth taking a chance at the last minute on the Agra-Jaipur route.
