Hi guys
This is the only real piece of advice I think I need as I'm going to have been on 3 planes and travelling for over 24 hours when I get to Trivandrum so I'll be tired as hell.
Can someone break down for me how to get my first train (Or bus?)in India from the Triv airport to Varkala? Or is it literally as easy as catching a rickshaw from the airport to the train station (Is there only one?) and going to the ticket office, saying "Hi, I'd like a ticket to Varkala on your next train please. 50 rupees? Cool. Oh yep, which platform do I go to? 9am departure? Thanks."?
I guess I'm just a bit worried because I will be so tired!
How much would a taxi be from Triv to Varkala?
Thanks guys

What time does your flight arrive?

It would likely be as you described to get to Varkala by train, though you would be travelling in unreserved carriages, as a tourist you'll be lucky to get a taxi fare to Varkala for only 3 times what a local would pay.

If I were advising a friend, I'd tell them to either get a taxi direct to Kovalam (and chill out for a day or so before heading to Varkala), or get a taxi to the station, but a ticket, check the train time, then cross the road outside the station (and go left a bit) and have a Masala Dosa and Tray coffee (milk & sugar seperate) at the funky and fab India Coffee House, chill out there for 30 mins then head back to the station.

All depends what time your flight arrives.

In Jan. 2010, we paid Rs1000 to Varkala from Airport but that was pre-arranged by hotel. It is much cheaper to get a pre-paid taxi at airport to Varkala. Its a small airport but one of the better organised ones in India.

hi
From airport you can take a pre paid taxi to Trivandrum Central Railway Station. if your flight is reaching trivandrum at 8.55 am, after immigration you will be able to board 11.50am train (kerala express, train number 12625 - trivandrum to new delhi) OR 1.23pm train(Island express, train number 16525 - trivandrum to bangalore)Distance is only 41KM. You can take SLEEPER CLASS ticket from any counter to VARKALA and board.Three tier Air conditioned coach is also available.

If it were me, I'd be taking Bulldog's advice and get a Pre paid taxi at the airport to Varkhala if you really need to get there
Straight away.

You will be pretty tired from the air travel and messing around at a crowded train station is the last thing one should attempt.

If you have the time, I would also consider what steven_ber suggested about going to Kovalam and chilling for a day or two and
then head up to Varkhala. You may even find someone in Kovalam who is also heading to Varkhala and willing to share the taxi with you.
Kovalam is definetly worth a look around.Couple of pics of Kovalam for ya.

I visited Varkala 2 months back from trivandrum. There are 2 good & cheap way to reach varkala.

1) Take a auto till Trivandrum Railway station and from there take a train to varkala, which is 1 hr journey. But you will have to check if you can get confirmed tickets.

2) (Best) Take a Auto to East Fort Bus Stop. From there you will get Low Floor Buses (A/C Buses) and that will be more comfortable while you enjoy the scenary and local people. It will be max 1hr to 1.5 hrs journey

In Both the mode you will have have to spend max 100/- per head.

Regards
Rohan

Hello All

Lots of great information in this thread already.

Just one thing I'm curious about - does anyone know the approximate cost of the Pre-paid Airport Taxi from TRV to Varkala?

Thanks and best wishes

Great information!

My flight will be arriving in Trivandrum at 3AM. Would it still be possible to take a train or bus at this hour? If not, how early does the Coffee Shop open for breakfast?

Thanks!
