Thanks to everyone here for the wealth of advice you've provided me thus far. After taking a look at a few guidebooks, reading information on here, and asking questions, I've come up with a tentative itinerary for my first trip to India in late-February / March. Please comment and offer suggestions. Any advice you provide is most appreciated.

Fly into Delhi
Delhi (3 nights)
Fly to Patna or Gaya
Bodygaya (3 nights, including a daytrip to Nalanda and Rajgir)
Train to Varanasi
Varanasi (2 nights, with sidetrip to Sarnath)
Fly to Khajuraho
Khajuraho (1 night)
Taxi to Orchha
Orchha (1 night)
Car and driver to Agra via Gwalior
Agra (2 nights)
Car and driver to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Jaipur (3 nights)
Car and driver to Udaipur
Udaipur (2 nights)
Fly to Mumbai
Mumbai (2 nights)
Fly out of Mumbai

Once again, many thanks.

Looks good!

Seems like a very reasonable itinerary.

Be sure to get to Ranakpur for the awesome 600 yr. ol Jain temple out in the countryside of Udaipur. You can hire a taxi for a 1/2 day or less trip. We did it last year & it was a highlight. It's also a lovely drive & so quiet when you get there, all you hear are the birds. We organized a taxi easily from Udaipur. You don't need anyone to guide you, just go in yourself & bring your camera!

You might possibly stop there if you leave Jaipur early enough before you get to Udaipur since you will already have a car & driver.

This may sound like a silly question but here goes. This part of your itinerary "Car and driver to Agra via Gwalior
Agra (2 nights)
Car and driver to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Jaipur (3 nights)
Car and driver to Udaipur" Are those all separate car hires or the same car? What I mean is does the driver stay with you? Seems rather expensive.

Thanks Camelgirl. I will be sure to check out and include Ranakpur.

Skeeter, I am thinking of each of those as separate car hires.

Oh, I see. I just was kind of curious as to what the car and driver do. Do they drive back empty from where you first hired them. Seems like a silly question and it probably is but I have a curious nature. Thanks.

Just thought of adding here. Whether you hire a cab from A to B only or A to B to C and back to A, you have to pay for the vehicle to return to A. The Driver stays and sleeps with the car when not driving. So it might make sense money wise to plan to Return back to where you started or to hire one car that takes you to most places in an economical way.

You are driving from Jaipur to Udaipur which is 400+ kms + Ranakpur (if you want to include in the same day) will be 100+ kms extra will make your day very long and tiring

What do you think about taking train from Jaipur to Udaipur? After arriving in Udaipur hire a separate car for Udaipur and Ranakpur visits?

This will save your vehicle cost for 400 x 2 way = 800 kms

Thanks Narendra. I will look into the difference in the costs.

Nitinsharma, I thought about taking a train or even flying, but it seems the options between Jaipur and Udaipur are limited.

@narendra.d is right, doing separate car & driver isn't the usual way to do that type of itinerary in India. You hire them for the whole trip. The driver looks after himself & finds his own place to stay, though often the hotel does have a place for a driver, if not, he might sleep in the car. In any case, they stay with you and you do have to pay for their return.

We did a roundtrip from Jaipur for a week with a car & driver so there was no extra charge for the return which you would have to pay since you're not doing a circle. It was the first time we'd ever tried that & it was excellent. Gave us so much flexibility & saw extra things.

I agree that trying to do Ranakpur from Jaipur is too long a day. It would be better to use your car/driver another day (or take a taxi if you don't keep your car & driver).

Thanks Camelgirl. After hearing from you and others in this forum and other forums, I'm leaning towards taking a train from Orchha / Jhansi to Agra, stopping in Gwalior for a few hours, and again taking a train from Jaipur to Udaipur. Our only car and driver leg would be from Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri. Does this sound more reasonable or should we do a train between Agra and Jaipur also?
