Not to be missed temples based on my recent trip (trip report in slooow progress!). (not just religious significance but also amazing architecture)
1. Suchindram temple - Suchindram near Kanyakumari
2. Nellaiappar temple - Thirunelveli - supposed one of the largest Shiva temples
3. Vettuvankovil temple - similar to Kailash temple of Ellora - a prototype? Kalugumalai near Thirunelveli & Thoothukudi (I missed this) - check youtube for the videos
4. Alagarkovil temple near Madurai

I hope you are planning for the three Chola heritage Unesco temples at Thanjavur, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram

There are also these 5 temples for Shiva in dancing form - Nataraja known as Panchasabhai - your itinerary incl above suggestion will cover 3 - Madurai, Nellai and Chidambaram. You can cover the other two - if you include Kutralam (Courtallam) famous for its waterfalls and has Kutralanathar temple - Chithrasabhai - full of amazing paintings and Thiruvalangadu near Chennai
wiki entry here

The routing looks fine for a backpacking trip. Can be optimized a bit once you have a final itinerary

Kanyakumari - Suchindram - Nagercoil - Thirunelveli - Madurai - Tiruchi - Thanjavur - Darasuram - Kumbakonam - Gangaikondacholapuram - Chidambaram seems to be the route as of now.

I visited Suchindram from Kanyakumari by bus - dropped off very close to the temple main entrance - day visit.

You can reach Thirunelveli and you will get town buses that drop you off just outside the temple entrance - day visit but plan for at least 2-4 hours at the temple as the complex is very large and need time to appreciate the sculptures and pillars - the musical pillars and some special sculptures of the pillars of the prakaram

Plenty of buses to Alagarkovil from Madurai - Periyar bus stand. Some buses drop you outside that require a 600m walk and some drop you at the temple entrance itself (they terminate there) - so check while boarding. Travel time is about an hour or so in one direction. You may have to stay at Madurai.

Get to Thanjavur and board a town bus that will drop you off close to the Periya (big) kovil (temple).

Darasuram is on the Thanjavur - Kumbakonam route and you will get dropped off very close to the temple. You can start early from Thanjavur cover this on the way to Kumbakonam. If you have time do see a temple or two at Kumbakonam.

Gangaikondacholapuram is closer to Kumbakonam but I do not know about bus services to this temple. But I guess you can do Kumbakonam - Gangaikondacholapuram - Chidambaram in a day or just half a day.

Chidambaram is well connected by buses and wherever you travel from the bus will drop you off at a point closer to the temple. Also suggest that you visit the Mangroves of Pichavaram which is about 16km from Chidambaram and connected by buses.

Hope you are aware that the Shiva temples close between 1230 - 1630 daily. So plan your itinerary accordingly.

Missed Courtallam - you can go there from Tirunelveli via Tenkasi by bus. Enjoy bathing in the waterfalls and visit the temple. The Chitrasabai is a bit away from the temple in walking distance. For onward journey, take a bus to Sengottai from and take the passenger train to Madurai (7am, 12pm, 1540 & 1550) - comfortabe and reasonably fast (takes about 4 hours for about 200km) compared to travel by road!
