We are having discussions with another couple we are trying to convince to travel to India with us. As a result, I have developed a basic wishlist to get some feedback on. Would appreciate your help.

1. Length of trip..16-18 days
2. Must-see locations to be included in itinerary...Taj Mahal, Varanasi, Amritsar. Open to suggestions for other locations and the order they are to be done.
3. Would like a balance between the full-on India experience and some rest-time. I imagine our choice of accommodation is important to achieve this.
4. Do not want to spend all the time travelling.
5. Is it feasible to have a driver/vehicle for the full duration or a mix of this plus rail travel? How would you schedule this?
6. Timing of trip...December. Does this exclude some locations from a weather perspective?

Thanks

I think you'll need to say what things you like doing before people can help much. Have you done much reading yet? If so, what sort of places interest you and your friends.

If you fancy seeing the Taj Mahal then there's many great forts/temples/palaces to see in Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Delhi, Orchha and many other places besides. Some of these please, like Udaipur, feel quite relaxed too.

Have you thought about visiting a wildlife place (Ranthambhore, Jim Corbett NP, Keoladeo)? Doing this for a few days will get you away from cities and therefore make it less full-on.

Car+Driver wise I think you can probably do it for much of your trip, and I really recommend a car+driver, but you might want to think about focusing on one area for this. Extensions to Amritsar and/or Varanasi may be better served by train/air as the driving distance between is too far.

I have nominated three places we really want to see. The Taj Mahal for obvious reasons, Varanasi to experience what I won't experience anywhere else, and Amritsar for the Golden Temple and the border ceremony nearby. Sure we want to see the forts but to be honest, we are pretty open minded.

Both Varanasi and Amritsar are fair distances apart which is why we are open to suggestions of places that might be nearby or can be seen esily enroute. We would like a fairly broad experience without locking ourselves into an itinerary that means we spend most of the time in transit. That's why I have only nominated three must see places. I'm also mindful that we would like a day or so where we can get some sort of break. That might mean a nice location or simply a nice hotel. We're open to ideas.

As for the driver/vehicle hire, would it be worthwhile using this to do a Delhi, Agra, Jaipur type section and then go to Varanasi and Amritsar separately by train....or is it possible to add Amritsar and other relatively nearby locations to the Delhi/Jaipur portion of the trip? Is there any place you would recommend we visit north of Delhi when travelling to or frm Amritsar?

Shimla

You Can add Shimla as its 100 Kms off the route delhi-amritsar and road is good,. as in your planning you are missing Indian Hill station and it can be added ... 16 days trip for delhi= amritsar-varanasi is good .. as you are also plannng to visit Taj mahal .. You can hire a taxi for delhi-agra-delhi one day is sufficient for the same ... If you plan to take another taxi for delhi-amritsar-delhi then shimla can added as well as you can travel to the border as well..
