Hi,

We are planning a trip to India and will be landing in Delhi on Dec 25. We will be staying one month, leaving from Kolkata. We have already thought of a preliminary itinerary :

Delhi (3 days)
Rajasthan (11-12 days)
- Pushkar
- Udaipur
- Jodhpur
- Jaisalmer
- Bikaner
Amristar and McLeod Ganj (4-5 days)
En route to Kolkata (7 days)
- Agra
- Fatehpur Sikri
- Khajuraho
- Varanasi
Kolkata (2 days)

As we migth have to make that shorter, do you have any suggestions on what to add/remove? Musts that we are missing out? Places we are staying too long/not long enough at? Keep in mind that we can't really add more if we don't substract.

Thank you all!

Skip Pushkar as the lake is completely dry and currently a dust bowl.
Also, suggest replacing Bikaner with Jaipur.

Thanks a lot Amalfi! In that case I think we will indeed skip Pushkar.

Also, why do you suggest Jaipur? I've heard it was a very urban, chaotic city with not much to offer tourists when compared to the other cities I mentionned - although I might be totally wrong. Just asking...

Another question : do you think it is realistic to go to Amristar and McLeod Ganj considering our current itinerary and timeframe?

Lastly, should we reserve trains well in advance, or is it okay to wait untill we're in Delhi ?

Thanks!

Actually, your itinerary is quite well spaced out.I have suggested the days to spend at each place. Also, since you are travelling at peak tourist season , it is strongly advised that you book all your tickets on the net immediately , at least the overnight ones.

As regards Jaipur not offering enough for tourists - I disagree. Jaipur offers the quintessential Rajasthani experience - Forts, palaces , lakes , bazaars , walled city, elephant rides, monkeys and is crammed with tourist sites and offers possibly the best shopping in India after Delhi. It is not part of the Golden Triangle for nothing. If you are scared that Jaipur will be crowded, brace yourself for what the other cities will throw at you.

Delhi (3 days) - ok - Avoid old Delhi on first day.

Rajasthan (11-12 days)ok
- Pushkar x
- Udaipur - 3 days
- Jodhpur - 1-2 days
- Jaisalmer - 3 days (incl overnight camel safari )
- Bikaner - replace with Jaipur - 2 days

Amristar and McLeod Ganj 4-5 days) ok

En route to Kolkata (7 days) ok
- Agra + Fatehpur Sikri - 1 day or 2 if you wish to see sunrise at the Taj.

- Khajuraho - 2 Days (include Orchha for a day which is enroute)
- Varanasi - 3 days

Kolkata (2 days) ok
