Good Day!

my niece and me will be visiting South India for our very first time. We have 15 days available and will be landing in Bangalore mid December.

We would love to do the following route: Bangalore/Mamallapuram/Tiruvannamalal/Chidambaram/Thanjavur/Trichy/Madurai/Mysore. Does this route sounds feasible in six-seven days? Of course we'd like to try trains/buses BUT if this travelling seems too odd for this frame of time in public transportation, we'd consider hiring car + driver. What can we do, please? And what would be the cost for driver + car for this route?

Please, help!!!

Once in Mysore, we're planning to rest and stay in this city seven days or so, exploring the area (Kannur and the Theyyam).

Thanks for a prompt reply. BTW, this will be my third time in India but very first time in the south. As for my niece, she's a very new visitor to India.

Well, to me it looks like a big rush through. But as you are japanese (you are?) it might be just the normal sightseeing speed.

I personally would reduce the list of towns and preferably stay a day longer than just passing through. I also would reduce the stay at Mysore and use those saved days for the travelling.

btw. I will be in Mamallapuram on December 15 and in Tiruvannamalai on December 18 to 22.

No matter how you decide, enjoy your trip !

I think girlfromvenus is right.
Besides Kannur is in Kerala, and the distance is so far that you cannot explore it as day-trips from Mysore.

Talking U R right!

GirlfromVenus, if we were japanese we'd do it in a rush, but no: we're from Peru (he -me- teaching in Tokyo, she -my niece- attends university in Lima). Due notice taken hence we'll provide 1-2 days to each place; will ski Mamallapuram. TKS Girl.

Shall we give for granted there are buses servicing the whole route? How can we reach Chidambaram from Tiruvannamalal? Scrutinizing the map it looks there're trains from the Chidambaram onwards --Tanjore, Trichy, Madurai--, am I right?

We'll land @ Bangalore airport Dec 22nd, most likely a day there and on we'll go. We'll miss Tiruvannamalal on the 22nd but maybe we can get together somewhere else for Ocha GirlfromVenus?

I got your point, Vonkla. We believe Theyyam is a blast, will reduce Mysore & expand our reach to Kannur; read somewhere Mysore/Kannur takes 5hrs by bus, is there any other option?

What about accomodation all along this route?

Guys, Thank You. Will you be in the area for the year end?

Gracias!!!

I don't know if there are trains from Chidambaram onwards. Many trains are passing through Villupuram when going south.

You definitely can do Bangalore-Tiruvannamalai with a bus.
If you would include Pondicherry in your itinerary, you could take a bus from Tiruvannamalai to Pondicherry, spend a day there.
Then get yourself a car/driver for the tour to Madurai, this will be more convenient. And from Madurai to Mysore take the Mysore Express train (overnight).

We will also arrive in Bangalore on December 22, coming from Tiruvannamalai, probably some time around midday.

how much money do you want to spend and/or can the rooms be basic or do you need luxury ?

don't forget it's tourist high season and reservations are recommended to avoid the hassle of spending half of your day with looking for a room.

===>>> I think this is a wise choice girlfromvenus: Bangalore/Tiruvannamalai (bus) + Tiruvannamalai/Pondicherry (bus) + Pondicherry/Tanjore/Trichy/Madurai (car+drive) + Madurai/Mysore (train) + Mysore/Kannur (train, via Mangalore).

Thanks bunches for your imput!

===>> definetely not luxury, basically CLEAN w/private bath. Around $30/double.

===>> I KNOW!!!

Thank you Vonkla, we pay due notice on Mysore/Kannur via Mangalore. Is the Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan in Kannur itself or otherwise 20Kms far (1H20' by bus)?

Cheers!

Feel I need to write this answer again, girlfromvenus.

Parassinikadavu is outside Kannur, we reached it by bus in less than an hour.

I am staying at Hotel Brindavan, which is located just off MG Road. I thought "if in a city like Bangalore, I just want to be in the middle of all the action"

I don't really know how busy my days in Bangalore will be, as I am invited for a wedding on december 24. But we could try to meet for a coffee/drink sometime. As soon as you have decided on a hotel we can think about that.

I'd say what's good for girlfromvenus may be good for both of us: Have been trying to find Brindavan hotel website, unfortunately unavailable. We'd like to make reservations at this same hotel for one night (in: Dec 22nd, out: Dec 23rd), one double-beded room for one night. Is a phone call the only way to get in touch with this hotel? OMG...

We'd definetely look forward to having Ocha w/U and let the good vibrations expand!
