I am traveling quite extensively in India and am about to hit the south but trying to get around on trains/buses as economically as possible but spending more on comfortable accommodation. Its a nice balance which I find works well. Below is my route which a friend helped to plan. I'd really appreciate it if anybody could give me some tips on rail/bus travel for the following to avoid spending on carhire for the full period!

December 2010
Transfer from Sultan's Battery to Nagarhole.
Transfer from Nagarhole to Ooty
Transfer from Ooty to Mysore
Transfer from Madurai to Munnar
Transfer from Munnar to Thekkady
Transfer from Thekkady to Serenity
Transfer from Serenity to Backwaters
Transfer from Backwaters to Kovalam
Transfer from Kovalam to Varkala
Transfer from Varkala to Backwaters
Transfer from Backwaters to Marari
Transfer from Marari to Cochin

WHen you are traveling to/from Karnataka. Always use KSRTC buses. They are of different variety (AC/Non AC /Volvo)

To check bus timing and book ticket use:-
http://www.ksrtc.in/

Actually you are traveling through 3 different States(Kerala Karnatka Tamilnadu). KSRTC will help you only while traveling withing /to/from Karnataka

I am really not sure is there any direct buses from Munnar to Thekkady. If there is any that should be very basic one.

I have few other suggestion like.

Stay in Ooty: Please check the hotel Lake View. It would be a guaranteed nice stay compere to other option.

For Stay in Thekkady. Always stay close to Forest Entry point. In preriyar there is lots of hotel near bus stand and they will say there is no option otherwise. But if you take an auto and reach Forest Entry point there is lots of option.

I would personal recommend http://www.periyarhousethekkady.com/

This is bit expensive. But as this one is govt stuff you will stay inside the forest. Even you will get some privilege while booking for Boat ticket.

I just jotted down my experience and I feel it is really scattered so not sure how much it going to help you

You seem to be doing a lot of backtracking from the list you have provided.
