Solo in Central-Western Himichal late Sep-Oct

This is my first post on IM and am truly a novice on forums. I've been to India a few times, but never on my own. I'll be landing in Delhi at the end of September 2014 and want to head up to Dharmasala area, but don't know what to do from there. I'm trying to avoid getting there, standing on the side of the road wondering what to do now.

I'm a 50 something female English-speaking solo traveler. I can't do long treks, but love to be outside. I want to see real Indian life, go to villages and learn about people and their daily lives.
Is it safe to travel alone? What's the best way to get to villages in the area and will the locals speak to me? Which villages should I go to? Where do I stay? I'll be on a medium budget. Should I use Macleod Ganj as a base and do day trips? Chamba/Dalahousie? or go southeast towards Shimla?
I've got about 2.5 weeks in that area before I need to be in Chandigarh. What's the best way to get to Chandigarh without spending 15 straight hours on a bus? Are there any trains in the area?

I'd really appreciate any itinerary advice you can give me.
