Hi I am a jewellery designer and work with semi precious raw uncut stones. I am wanting to know where the best places in India are to buy and search for these. Preferably somewhere that has a lot of different stones to choose from. And or if anyone knows or has any contacts in any other countries that would also be amazing! I am willing to travel directly to countries as I want to hand pick them myself.

Thank you

Jaipur
I am sure they come from other places.

Any particular stone you are looking for?

While this thread is old, it's good reading about finding stones in India : http://www.indiamike.com/india/spiri...stones-t23347/.

I agree with GP about Jaipur being a major center and would like to warn the OP that unless she knows her stuff, it's very easy to get cheated. If you know how to identify real from fake, the place to go in Jaipur would be Gopaljee ka Rasta (entrance from Johari bazaar). Do not under any circumstances fall for the touts in Johari bazaar itself who would ask you to come with them for 'good prices' or 'bulk dealing'.

OP has not indicated what kind of precious and semi precious stones she specializes in polishing. In deshland, as in 47th St, NYC, or Tel Aviv; casual retail buyer of uncut stones, rarely gets top grade stones. In deshland, Jaipur, Mumbai and Kolkata are known for dealing in uncut stones. Jaipur for all semi precious that are mined in Rajasthan; Mumbai for all imported diamonds from London, Jo'burg and other stones from Brazil. Kolkata for mines off Orissa, North East and South.

Jaipur also gets large volumes of stones from Brazil, Thailand and Burma. It competes with Surat, most notably, for that chunk of the business (cutting and polishing of imported stones). I understand that these are sold into the domestic market though. Every year, in local newspaper, there's news of some young Jaipur jeweler being abducted, robbed at gunpoint or worse in one of these countries.

Yes, both Kolkata and Mumbai too get rough gems mined in Rajasthan and vice-versa. Jaipur does have a lock on cutting and polishing native stones from Tonk, Bhilwara, Rajghar ? Jaipur imports and exports largely emerald. 9 out of 10 emerald one buys anywhere in the world, passes through Jaipur. Talking of which, it reminds me of Dev Anand's superflop movie Diamond Emerald.

Thanks for your replies. I know my stones pretty well so I think well hope I wouldn't get taken advantage on with real v's fakes.

I actually don't cut or polish any of my stones or crystals, I love the rawness of the natural uncut semi precious stones. But its also important that they look as visually nice as possible too, hence why I want to go handpick them myself as you don't always get what you want if buying online.

I have been to Bangkok jewellery and Gem fair a couple of times and have a few contacts there but each time I go back they seem to have nothing different thats why I want to look at other countries. I'm also thinking about going to the Hong Kong fair.

Im after any stone really as I design the pieces based on the stones I get. I have turquoise, rose quartz, tourmaline, aquamarine, citrine, lapis lazuli, kyanite, amongst many more. Just wanting to check what I can get from other counties.

Since you are aware of HongKong Gem fair, you should also head to Madagascar ! I am sure you have heard of it's rich trove of semi precious stone mines.

Didn't know there was a film by that name. What this reminded me of was the use of young men by Jaipur jewelers as couriers.

In India, in Gujarat State, there's a place called "Khambhat". You must visit this place for your requirement. I am sure you will amaze.

That sounds like one of those 24 hour open shops, closed for lunch, dinner and between 11 pm and 7 am.
