Reserving a seat on a train

Hi guys

I've bought two train tickets (Cochin - Mangalore - Canacona) via a UK travel agent who sells India Rail passes... he's sent us the passes but there's no sign of a seat reservation on either train (we have a connection) let alone reference to the fact we're on a sleeper and need a bed.

Am I missing something? Do I need to reserve the seat when I arrive in India or have I made a mistake?

Any help greatfully received!

Cheers, Jo

Search the Indian Railways forum here for Indrail passes. Steven Ber has some great information in there.

If you bought IndRail passes, you still have to go to a train station and make reservations. These passes will give you access to all sorts of quotas, so you may well get the reservations you want, even if you want to travel the next day. You cannot make these reservations on line.

You will find it easier to make these reservations in a larger city where the clerks are used to dealing with the rail passes and with such things as Foreign Tourist Quotas. I was able to use one in some smaller towns but it took 3 times as long.

Hello Jo and welcome to indiamike

I can't remember exactly how S.D. Enterprises work, but the Indrail Pass you have will include the reservations, I just can't remember if any of the train details are on the passes, you need to re-confirm the tickets when you get to India and then you'll be given all the train and berth details, re-confirm at the place you land in India, the bigger cities are often better for this for the reasons meantioned above.

What trains have you booked? what dates?

I'm curious as to why you've booked the trains you have, apart from a saturday night, there's much better options from Cochin to Karwar.

From Karwar, get a taxi to Karwar bus stand (Rs70 ish, it's a few kms), then a bus to Cancona (30kms), or just get a taxi from Karwar to Palolam or whatever beach you're going to.

WW-USA, S.D. sells individual tickets by using 12/24 hour passes.

I'm like Jo - new to this

Hi all, apologies for jumping into your thread but I'm not quite certain how these forums work.

I am very much like Jo. I'd like to book train tickets for a trip I am planning for March 2010 and am uncertain as to how best to go about things. I too have come across the SD Enterprises site and I have also looked at the direct links to the indian railways but I do not seem to be able to enter dates past Dec 09?

The reason I need help / advice (other than booking the train tickets is - is there a location that is mid way (I have the list of stations that the MNGLA LKSDP EXP train stops at) that is a must see and will also allow us to break up the train Journey.

Thanks

Hi Les and welcome to IM.

You can not book tickets on Indian trains any earlier than 90 days from departure date. For March, that would be sometime in Dec.

To get a feel of how Indian Railways and ticket bookings work, search for similar threads. There is abundant information on it on IM.

thanks for the advice Lil Boy Big Town.

Its just a bit daunting to buy all the flights and hotels etc and have the train journey booking pending for another 3 months!

However if thats how it works then so be it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks Les
