I am not saying that rednecks, or whatever the Indian equivilant is, are the most enlightened people, there is a lot worse than pissing goes on in some rural comunities...

You travel business class, watch ball games every other night and eat and drink there as well but then you live in a building that doesn’t have washer and dryer in the basement. Something is amiss here for sure, whats going on in New York

It so happened that a day before my current trip, I was at one of my local dives, near the laundromat , where my dirty clothes were in the washer and this trio were asking the bartender the same thing in a roundabout way. So I said, Want a real quick glimpse ?

I walked them to the laundromat, and moved my clothes from washer to the dryer, went to the bodega next door and get a bag of junk-food, and came back to the dive. I knew they were POed.

Vanna, buy me a clue for $1000

Not everyone rushes out to buy a house with white fence in the 'burbs, put two cars in the garage, produce a litter of 2.5 kids and save save save, only to show - 'They have arrived' and then sing - 'Babu mai to sahib ban gaya'

For phoren backpackers the real India is what they see on cycle rickshaws rides in puraani dilli or on a stroll along the ghats of Varanasi or on a sidetrip to a village whilst in Manali.

For the researchers it lies in the villages of Bihar and UP and Jharkhand.

For the expats the real India is the slums of Delhi and Mumbai.

For the spiritual seeker, it is by the banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh or Varanasi. Or inside the sanctum sanctorum in temples in TN and Kerala. Not to mention the many many ashrams.

For the rebel India is the tribal hinterland or deep within the DNA of the original inhabitants of the Andamans.

For the adventurer India is its mountains.

For the banal, India is Goa. Goa is India.

And for the truly refined, the quintessential and unbeatable India lies everywhere, all around you...... in its many many regional thaalis.

The Real India ceased to exist when the 1 anna coin was no longer legal tender. I remember that as being 1962. I'll have to check to make sure my memory isn't playing tricks. In the summer of 1962 shops in Delhi wouldn't accept them anymore but shops in Mussoorie did.
