We are a family travelling to India next March. We will use a private tour operator, but I want to have our own ideas before we engage them.

We are very used to travelling and we tend to cover a lot of territory and stay in each place 2-3 nights maximum. Our view of travel is that we are trying to get a "sampling" with the idea that if we are lucky maybe someday we can return to our favorites for leisure.

We will be in India for 16 days and looking to travel 5-star. We already have flights into and out of Mumbai, which are fixed. We are more than willing to fly within India if that is do-able

Here are the places that are a must to me, in order of importance:
1. Agra
2. Varanasi
3. Jaisalmer
4. Jaipur area (Amanbagh hotel)

I would like to add
5. Jodhpur
6 Udaipur

And of course we will have some time in Mumbai on either end. Can we fit in all of these destinations? Which would you drop?

Thanks in advance.

I think you want to cover too many places, especially Jaisalmer and Varanasi are far apart from each other.

The following is the most logical sequence and mode of transport I think.

Mumbai - Udaipur or Jodhpur by plane.

(Udaipur) - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer by car

Jaisalmer - Jaipur by train

Jaipur - Agra by car

Agra - Varanasi by train

Varanasi - Mumbai by flight

Thank you, I know that Varanasi and Jaisalmer are very far apart, but to be honest they are both high priority to me, so I would sooner reduce the list, even down to 4 destinations, than give up one of those destinations.

Thank you for the transportation suggestions.

Ok just got back from India and I can tell you Agra is very overrated. Ive heard great things about Jaipur and Rajasthan in general, every city looks and feels different.

Varanasi is a place you need to visit but please visit somewhere else in India first because you need to get adjusted to the heat, sounds, smells, chaos, confusion and injustice of India because Varanasi is that on steroids!

ill post my travel pics soon. Happy Travels!

I would say that you take a flight from Mumbai to Jodhpur which will save the time, then as soon as you arrive in Jodhpur, drive to Jaisalmer its 4 to 5 hrs journey.

Then you can continue your trip in the car in a way Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi, Delhi. Depends which all places you want to visit or transportation mode eg, train, car, flights etc you choose. Varanasi is connected with flights and trains from both Delhi and Agra.
