Hello

I hope you can help me with itinerary suggestions.

My girlfriend and I have booked return flights to Mumbai Feb 23.
As it will be my partners first time not on a beach holiday I wanted to mix some travelling with some relaxation. We love seeing sights (forts, palaces, natural beauty) and cultures with the Taj Mahal a must.

I have since read hundreds of articles and opinions, now I just don't know what to do.

Original itinerary was this:

- Mumbai Flight to
- Udaipur(2 days)Train to
- Jaipur(3 days) Train to
- Agra(1 day) Train to
- Delhi (1 day)Flight to
- Goa (10days) Train to
- Mumbai (1 day)

With seeing so many comments about missing so much I was worried to book it. So much so that I started to look at another itinerary:

- Mumbai flight to
- Delhi & Agra (2 days) Flight to
- Kerala (5 days) Train to
- Goa (10 days) Train to
- Mumbai (1 day)

For Kerala we would like to see/do Backwater trip, tea & cardamom plantations, hill station, valkary beach, anywhere else?

Looking into this I am jsut as worried about the time we have.

Can you help with any the following questions please:

Which would be the most rewarding itinerary?
Which ever you think, with the limited time we have what are the fundamental things that we could see?
Could any of these places be missed?
Could the time be reduced in any place?
Should we just go to Taj Mahal and then to goa and hope to come back again with more time to explore?

Thanking you in advance
Kev

bignumber10,

My advice is to stay only in South India and forget Taj Mahal, Delhi, etc., there are so many places to visit in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala...

I'd second the suggestion. You'd spend too much time travelling and there won't be much relaxation. It's good to see north on its own; delhi, agra, rajasthan deserve more time to be enjoyed and you won't experience much culture in 1-2 days!

Leave it for next time and go south if you prefer beaches, you can see mumbai, then goa, then kerala and maybe some other Southern places (sorry, I'm not a great expert of South India!).

How about this..quick summary Reach Delhi as soon as possible..Book a Delhi-Agra-Jaipur trip commonly called Golden Triangle Trip with some agent..Say Panickers Travels.Fly from Delhi to Goa spend like 3 days covering South and North Goa..then Take a Train, overnight journey... cheap n faster to Kerala/Kochi.Spend 2 day in Fort Kochi,Kochi... 2 days in
Munnar(tea & cardamom plantations, hill station)....2 Days in Allaphuza(back waters)... Fly back to Mumbai spend a day or two there return home with great memories.

3 weeks is actually quite a long time. There is so much debate about this here on IM, but to ask what needs to be done in a certain amount of time is like asking how long is a bit of string! Ultimately, it really depends on you and your travelling style. If you want to go around "doing" places (been there, done that) you can "see" a hell of a lot in 3 weeks! This suits some people, whereas others will spend 3 weeks in one area only!

In my opinion, it is possible to do North and South in 3 weeks provided you factor in some internal flights and some overnight train journeys in zone. I don't see what's wrong with your original itinerary! It actually looks OK, but I would just replace Goa with Kerala. Much nicer and you still have the beach scene too! But that's just an opinion! Goa is nice, but I just think Goa and Kerala together on one trip (as you have in some other itineraries) along with everything else you want to see is pushing things a bit! Less is more!

Also remember that your girlfriend has not done many "travelling" type holidays, so it's easier to take it slow! Avoid bus journeys, or long taxi journeys and generaly apart from trains avoid travelling after dark! These things can make travel unpleasant to a first timer!

Hello Jorge

Having looked into this some more we are spending 6 days in Kerala. I was hoping you could help with my itinerary please?
We arr Kochi airport Sun 28/02/10 11:35 and dep by train either from Kochi 05/03/10 @ 22:35 or Trivandrum @ 07:30.
We would like to see Kochi, Trivandrum, 1 or 1/2 day backwater cruise (Apalluzha)and a hill station. Also, do you know anything about Thrissur festival which is on 02/03/10? Is it worth seeing and could it be fit into my itinerary?
Also, is there anywhere else that we should make a point of visiting/seeing?
Many thanks for you help

Regards
Kev

umm hill station in kerala =Munnar.
Kochi, Trivandrum, 1 or 1/2 day backwater cruise (Apalluzha)=perfectly logical.
Thrissur Pooram is a festival during which you will see elephants beautifully decorated with jewels.
ps:And you will not have a inch of place to stand in the city.see google images or google with term "Thrissur Pooram"

Have a great trip.
