My daughter and a friend are coming from Alaska to visit me in Ellora. The friend will be enjoying her first trip to India and of course must see the Taj. Therefore we have a plan that involves too many hours of driving, but we have a comfy car and a good driver and I think we can survive and prosper.

Transit time from their homes to mine is about 37 hours!

I welcome advice about each destination city, especially recommendations about good places to eat or "must see" attractions.

Oct. 29 - pickup at IXU, rest at Ellora Heritage Resort.
Oct. 30 - nearby: Khultabad, Valley of the Saints, tombs of Zarari Zarbaksh, Malik Ambar and Aurangzeb.
Oct. 31 - nearby: Ellora Caves.
Nov. 1 - Drive about 7 hours to Mandu. Visit Jama Masjid. Lodging at Malwa Retreat. They have a pool.
Nov. 2 - Drive about 8 hours to Udaipur. Sightseeing. Lodging at Blu Feather Resort & Spa. They have a pool too.
Nov. 3 - Drive about 7 hours to Jaipur. I am determined to track down handblock-printed cottons at Suraj Titanwala in Bagru. Lodging at Haveli Kalwara.
Nov. 4 - Drive about 4 hours to Fatehpur Sikri, explore, then 1 more hour to Agra. Lodging at Aman Homestay for two nights.
Nov. 5 - Agra. Driver's day off.
Nov. 6 - First day of Diwali. Drive about 7 hours to Guna. Enjoy lights, maybe Hanuman Tekri or Fort of Jai Singh. Lodging: Hotel Rajvillas.
Nov. 7 - Drive about 8 hours to Maheshwar. Dine on Kathal biryani and duck in pomegranate at Ahilyabai Holkar's fort-palace, lodging at Hotel Kachan Recreation.
Nov. 8 - Six hours driving to get home unless we stop at the Maharani Ahilya Bai Museum in Rajwada or visit friends in Mhow. Main day of Diwali.
Nov. 9 - Friday market in Ellora. Visit Grishneshwar, 12th Jyotirlinga.
Nov. 10 - Last day of Diwali, depart for airport at 1900.

Makes me tired just to think of all those hours on the road, but we are good at amusing ourselves and have an excellent driver.

Very good. Now, I wrote a long post describing how to improve this, but the cache-devil gobbled it. So here's the curt version -

1. The drive times are estimated based google maps, yes? So they dont work. You havent factored in recovery time post a long drive before the sightseeing commences. Also no break time, no pee time, no argument over where to stop for the scenic view time.
2. If the objective is sightseeing, and not just road-trip, then Mandu deserves a full day - actually you could spend two - but at least a full day.
3. Udaipur needs two, three if you include Chittorgarh.
4. You can drop Jaipur. If the day includes 7 hours of driving, plus shopping, there'd be no sightseeing.

Actually why dont you focus only on MP and Agra? It's more than a handful for the time you have. You could go to Orchha, Khajuraho etc OR you could do the Bhopal belt.

Innova is a comfortable car. However traveling daily for around 7-8 hours on an average will be tiring.

Is visiting all those long distance places a must? Why not try Ellora - Mandu - Indore - Maheshwar - Omkareshwar - Hanuwantiya - Bhopal - Vidisha - Ujjain - Ellora?
