My g/f and I are doing a trip to SE asia this December and we only have about a week in India. Obviously this is a only fraction of the time needed to explore this huge and diverse country (we'll likely be back in coming years).

Our main question is whether to go to the North (Delhi & surrounding area) or South (Mumbai, Chennai).

What are the big cultural (and other) differences between the North and South? Which area do you prefer?

Put another way, what are the places you would definitely visit if you only had a week in the country?

From the reading I've done so far on this forum, Chennai seems to rate pretty highly, so currently I'm leaning a bit towards the South.

thanks for any help,

edaly

Ohya, the other option we're considering is splitting the difference and flying into Delhi and out of Chennai.

In December, ie in the winter season..go to South India.

In south, it is nice and pleasant. You can't visit the South in Summer.

The north gets really cold in winter.....and hence u have visit north in Summer.

i will travel to Delhi,Agra,Jaipur on 1st Dec a week period where are full of momuments in north. Beach resort and nature landscape is perferred to go south.

Then fly over from mumbai.

The temp. is not much chilling for you travelling in north.

one thread gives next 10 days temps over here approx. 24-12 degree Delhi.

Very difficult question indeed. I suggest Delh-Agra-Jaipur & possibly Bharatpur bird sanctuary.
Delhi itself has plenty of historical monuments.
Winter is very pleasant at this moment.
Good luck.
