Hi,

I'm a UK solo female traveller looking to do a one month trip up or down the west coast of India between Mumbai and Trivandrum.

Im looking to travel between the 17th December and the 17th January

I would primarily like to stick to trains where possible as a mode of travel.

Has anyone who has done this journey recommend which way round to do ? top to bottom ot bottom to top? I'll be heading from and back to the UK.

How easy are trains to book in advance? Should I book in advance or can I do this when I am there?

How safe will I be (relatively) travelling as a solo female? any particular precautions I should take?

And where should I go and what should I see? it would be nice to meet up with other travellers but I'm not looking for party holiday destination

Thanks in advance for help and advice :-)

Kerala is more relaxed then the hectic Mumbay metropole. Therefor start in Trivandrum

It is peak time around that time so you must book your trains in advance.
In the railway forum are a lot of threads about this.
You must register yourself by the Indian railway and the cleartrip booking site. It looks complicated but if you follow the steps mentioned here you manage.

The erail.in site gives good information about the trains between the different towns.

At least take some time for the backwaters around Alleppey and Kochi.
In the inland bur not to far from the coast is Hampi. A little difficult to reach but worth the effort.
Since we don't like party holidays we avoided Goa.

Have a nice trip

Fantastic thanks for the advice.

The rail booking looks a little complicated but I'll read through these forums for the advice, I think unlike SE Asia I will try and get myself a 4 month itinerary and book all my train tickets in advance.

theres some fantastic advice here - what a great India travel resource!
