I am planning a 2-3 week trip to India this fall, and the dates I can go would be either early October or early November (2014).

I've been told that October is still pretty hot, and that early November is a bad time to go because of the Pushkar Camel Fair - that many hotels would be sold out, rates will be high, etc. (Also, I'm a travel agent and would be less likely to get travel industry rates when hotels are full.)

It's my first trip to India, so I am thinking that I will be mostly in the North - Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, etc... possibly with a few days in Mumbai.

Which set of dates would you recommend? Any other factors I should consider?

October as well as November are fine.

The Pushkar fair is from October 26 to November 4, and this has only influence on Pushkar itself and maybe nearby Ajmer .

If you want to visit Mumbai and Delhi consider an open-jaw ticket. Landing in Delhi and leaving from Mumbai.

A possible itinerary is Delhi - Jaipur - Agra - Varanasi - Jhansi/Orchha - Bhopal - Aurangabad - Mumbai.

I have almost three years in India, mostly in the area you're contemplating going (with over a year total in Varanasi alone). October . . . hot? . . . not in my book. October and November are two of my favorite months to go (again, to the area you're contemplating). In Varanasi at that time the rain/heat/humidity are gone. Mornings are cool, evening too. Air very clear.

You mention the Pushkar camel fair, Delhi, Varanasi, Jaipur, Mumbai . . . that's a lot of territory to cover in 2/3 weeks. I think that parts of Rajasthan would be ideal at this time, along with the forementioned Ganges Valley - Varanasi, etc.

Would also be nice to have some idea of your budget. Yes, rates do rise in Pushkar for the fair, but again, all in all not so terribly expensive. More, yes . . . but in the larger scheme of things, not so bad at all.

Seems like October is my vote
