Hi All,

My partner and I are starting to vaguely plan a trip to north-east India next year. At the moment we're thinking of going for about four weeks from mid-September and flying to Kolkata. We then thought we'd head to Varanasi before going to Darjeeling, then up to Sikkim and then flying out of Kolkata again. We're thinking that we'd like to spend a good part of the trip in Sikkim, probably at least 10 days, to make sure we have time to explore the area without rushing as well as relaxing in what looks an amazing place.

We don't want to pack too much into our time but feel we could probably have one or two other places in our itinerary so were wondering if anyone could suggest any particularly interesting places that would fit in to this vague route. We'd be interested in a national park to see some wildlife but a lot of the ones we've looked at don't seem to be open the time we're planning on going or don't have great reviews. Any recommendations?

Also, do people think the weather would be ok at this time. A lot of the advice I've seen suggests going after September but this would be difficult for us due to work/study commitments.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi JTC,

Welcome to India Mike !

Why don't you fly into Delhi and fly out of Kolkata. That might make more sense.
These days open jaw tickets don't cost a whole lot more.

Sikkim : Pelling area is lovely. I'd recommend at least 3 days there.

Here are the Sikkim related posts from my blog.

Weather should be fine.

Thanks for the reply 10yearitch!

We'd already found your blog and had a read - very interesting and informative.

Will have a look at flights to Delhi - were a bit put off as we thought it would be quite a bit more expensive but as you say it may well make more sense.

Having a quick look at National parks near Delhi it looks as though Corbett may be a good one. Anyone been there and can recommend that or any other ones?

Bandhavgarh is awesome for Tiger Spotting.
Especially Tala Zone.

It is not near Delhi, but quite accessible by an overnight train and is close to Khajuraho.

Thanks for the tip - looks like a great place and perhaps somewhere that would be possible between Delhi and Varanasi if we did end up flying to Delhi.

Yes, Bandhavgarh would be in the way and then go to Khajuraho since you are in the area.
