Mysore to Cochin in one week
Hi Guys,
The plan is to fly into Cochin, do a backwaters trip and take in Allepey, then get a train up to Goa, across to Hampi and down to Mysore (should take two weeks) , So, I reckon I’ll have a week left before flying out again from of Cochin.

So where do you recommend I should go, from Mysore, (in a southwards direction) bearing in mind that I need to end up back in Cochin and only have a week?

I’m thinking maybe, Madurai, the southernmost tip (Kanniyakumari), a hill station (Munnar or Ooty) or just some more beaches in Kerala (Varkala, Kovalum). By the way, I am open to ideas on destinations other than those that I listed!!

I’ve no preference really as my knowledge of them all is limited, I just don’t want to miss out on anything great that I have time to see and I want it to make logistic sense in terms of returning to within a week Cochin. If you do suggest somewhere, I would really appreciate any info you have on how to get to these places from Mysore, i.e. bus/train/connections etc. (if you know)

I look forward to your suggestions,

Madikeri and surrounding area would be nice (moving westward actually). The route is by bus if I remember correctly, 3 hours my old LP says. Have a peek here to get an idea. Travelling through the Western Ghats (low mountain range) it seemed like the kind of place to just get out anywhere and look for a guest house if there is one, with the public bus prices you could afford not to continue your journey. Move on to Thalasseri which is hardly touristed or any coast town thereabouts then move down to Cochin.

If you're into Tibetan Buddhism you could head for Bylakuppe but they seem to appreciate prior notice these days.

Madurai is nice enough by the way. I wouldn't know what else to recommend in that general direction though; maybe consider Kodaikanal for a hill station, Anamalai or Mudumalai sanctuary for a wildpark, Trichy for a temple town.

Mind you all of this is too much for one week, just some suggestions. If you head for Madikeri you'll be doubling up on some routes so maybe rework your itinerary once you've decided.

Varkala was turning into a bit of a tourist dump when I visited in the early nineties and word here has it it's not improving. Kovalam is more resortish which you have to like I guess. I hear mixed reports about it, although word has it it has a bit for everyone.
