Iím planning my 3rd trip to India this coming winter. Iím getting stuck with some logistics and I am hoping that some of you will come to my rescue.

My name is Sevananda Padilla, Puerto Rican living in New York City. I have been loving India even before I knew it existed. As a child I used to dream about ďthat magical placeĒ full of people that I could understand and love even if I was only dreaming about them! But Iíll end that part here and proceed with what is puzzling me.

Iíll be flying JFK airport on the 7th of January 2019. Iíll be arriving into Delhi airport the morning of the 8th. Iím planning to spend 4 nights at the capital just to jet lag and kick it with a couple of local friends.

#1. I will take a train to Allahabad on the 12th which should take there in the morning of the 13th of January. Youíve got it! Iím going for a 4 night experience to the ďArdh Kumbh MelaĒ. I have already booked accommodations! (13-17 Jan)

Questions:
-1. When should I book my train before every seat dissolves into thin air? I really want to book it as soon as the reservations open!

-2. What are the most important things I should know about the Kumbh? How do I go about getting into the Ganga on Mahashivaratri? Any suggestions and Ideas are warmly and gratefully welcome!

#2. I am considering going from Allahabad to Lucknow on 17th January via train and spend about 5 nights there (17th-22nd). I have heard amazing things about the city and itís surroundings.

Also, I am a serious admirer of the great Swami Vivekananda. I understand that he spent a good amount of time there and that he left something established there.

Questions:
-1. Can anyone tell me what are the highlights of Lucknow, what is there not to miss and the surroundings?

-2. How about Swami Vivekananda? His legacy in Allahabad, etc.

-3. What else is there to do and see?

#3. From Lucknow I am thinking to start heading towards Rishikesh. However, I would rather split the journey between Lucknow and Haridwar, actually, in 2 segments just to avoid the very long traveling time inside of a train. (22-25 January)

Questions:
-1. Is it advisable at all?
-2. If it is advisable; where would be a good place to brake the journey (for not more than 3 days)?
-3. What is ďthereĒ of interest?

#3. Once I arrive into Haridwar, I really want to avoid as much as possible the insanity of the drivers that want to drive you to Rishikesh for a crazy amount of money. I have a place to stay and I donít need unnecessary harassment. I have already booked a flat in Tapovan! Please inform me as soon as possible. Thank you!

It is already late at night here in New York and it is pass my bed time. I will add the rest of my questions tomorrow or next week regarding traveling to a few places in Uttarakhand before returning back to Delhi for a few extra nights. I will be flying home on the 27th of March.

Thanks to each of for your kind advice and recommendations!

Sincerely and gratefully yours,
Sevananda

Hello and Welcome to IM,

When I went to the Kumh Mela in Nasik just back in 2015. I took a water tight waist belt which fit my passport and phone. When i found a place to take a dip, no problem.

In Haridwar, don't listen to the overpriced guys at the railway station. When leaving the station take a right and walk down to the bus station and ask where the Rishikesh bus is/will be and take that up to Lakshman Jhula, from there you can either walk to or find other transport to your flat which is presumably up, in Tapovan somewhere.

This https://www.indiamike.com/india/utta.../lucknow-t240/ is a rather old thread but contains a lot of useful information about Lucknow.

You can read about the things we did in the October part of my 2014 journal.

Regarding rail booking, you should attempt booking as soon as it opens, else, you may be waitlisted.

Bus travel is an alternative.

Thank you very much! Yesterday I booked my train from Delhi to Allahabad! That was the one that was worrying me due to the Kumbh. Tomorrow I will book a train taking me out of Allahabad into Lucknow.

Thank you once more,
Sevananda
