I'm going on a round-the-world trip in October (South/East Africa, India, SouthEast Asia, South America). I'm a 24 year old Canadian gal travelling solo and looking to spend approx $30 US per day.

I will be flying into Mumbai in Jan 11th from Nairobi.
I'd like to make my way in 6-8 weeks to Calcutta then buy a one-ticket to Bangkok.

I'd like to see different aspects of India but not feel rushed being hurried from city to city.

Any route suggestions?

there's a lot to see! .
One thing I might suggest is to figure out if you want to go thru the North or the South. You have enuff time to do a good sampling of either region but would be a bit rushed to do both. You are right to want to avoid getting rushed: being rushed in India is a trip-killer, guaranteed!
North: Rajasthan, Ganges Valley, Mtns, Orrissa
South: Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Orrissa

The North has the stereotypes- holy rivers, the TaJ, Arabian nights stuff in the desert.
The South is mellow, more tropical, less touristy, more friendly, amazing temples, beaches

Tons of info here on all these states.

Regardless, the first place I would send you in either case is Aurangabad to visit Ajanta, Ellora, and Daulatabad. There's pix and info on this site about them.

So check out either North or South, and get back to us. Hint: Both are AMAZING, you can't go wrong either way.

Oh, the things you'll see!!!

A trip I haven't made yet but have in mind & have thought along about for some friends of mine is along the Narmada river which would be perfect for your route. Might be better for a second visit really as it's a little more off the beaten track. I've given some of my thoughts on it here. Then again and like Bija said, you could pretty much go anywhere provided you keep it realistic for the 6-8 weeks.
