I will be doing a road journey from Madurai to Pondicherry, any suggestions on the route ?

I was thinking of heading to the coast upon reaching Trichy and then Thanjavur and following the coastline up to Pondi, would this take too much time ?

What do you think Nick H ?

I hope you intend to stay overnight at a couple of places on your way to Pondicherry.

The route you intend to take is good. You can see some well known temples on the way. The Srirangam temple in Trichy, Rockfort Temple in Trichy, Big Temple in Thanjavur, Palace in Thanjavur, Darasuram temple near Kumbakonam etc.

Thanks aarosh, I don't think any O'night stops are required from Madurai > Pondi as it is 5 & 1/2 hours on the main hwy which I think I'll stick to, I'm not into temples so won't be stopping for any of that eventhough I recognize what amazing structures they are.

is just what I thought when I looked at Google Maps! From there, towards the coastline at Chidambaram.

On the other hand,

makes me wonder if it is worth bothering? aarosh and others might tell what else is worth seeing on the way through those towns.

You are an old hand, so I won't presume to tell you what you should look at or why! But, for me, the temples and their surrounding areas are slices of Indian-city life that are great experiences even if one has no interest at all in religion or even architecture. I like temples... but I probably prefer them without some guide telling me the significance of a statue/deity or how many hundreds of years it has been there.

My only experience of that route is the Pondicherry/Chidambaram section, having done one Chenna/Chidambaram/Chennai trip. It was very pleasant. It was green and lush, and very different to the somewhat desert-like Tamil Nadu of the Pondicherry/Chennai part that I am more familiar with. With which I am more familiar

You could take a diversion via the Chettinad region (Karaikudi) and see some mansions of Chettiars on the way. If you do intend to see these mansions then take the route via Karaikal - Chidambaram (Pichavaram) - Pondicherry.

Thanks Nick & aarosh for your inputs, think I'll stick to the most direct route to Pondi, the road journey is long enough as it is so not keen on making it any longer.
