Hi all, below is the itinerary I have planned. What do you think? Given the limited time we have, I have tried to include most of the highlights, without making it too hectic. Have I succeeded? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Day 1 (17 Aug): Delhi - Leh flight

Day 2 (18 Aug): Leh - Shey - Thiksey - Hemis - Leh

Day 3 (19 Aug): Leh - Lamayuru - Alchi - Leh

Day 4 (20 Aug): Leh - Hunder (via Khardung-La-Pass)

Day 5 (21 Aug): Hunder - Leh

Day 6 (22 Aug): Leh - Sarchu

Day 7 (23 Aug): Sarchu - Manali via Rohtang Pass, Keylong

Day 8 (24 Aug): Manali - Vashist - Manikaran - Manali

Day 9 (25 Aug): Manali

Day 10 (26 Aug): Manali - Dharamsala

Day 11 (27 Aug): Dharamsala/Mcleod Ganj

Day 12 (28 Aug): Mcleodganj to Triund (trek)

Day 13 (29 Aug): Triund - Ilaka - Triund - Mcleodganj (trek)

Day 14 (30 Aug): Dharamsala - Shimla

Day 15 (31 Aug): Shimla

Day 16 (01 Sep): Shimla - Kalka/Kalka - Delhi (train)

Many thanks,

Amit

>> Day 2 (18 Aug): Leh - Shey - Thiksey - Hemis - Leh
This will be really long day ... I'd suggest keeping Shey as the base for this leg.

pangong tso is missing from your itinerary .....and in case you can have two extra days
do this Leh pangong tso
pangong tso to tso moriri
tso moriri to sarchu
but then you need enough petrol/diesel to cover about 750 kms ....
else you do leh pangong tso Leh either over night or day trip

thanks vishal. I had pangong tso in there but took it out (reluctantly) because its a 6 hr drive away and I would have had to stay overnight there too. this means I would have to take days out elsewhere. like I said, I have tried to make sure its not all too tiring by minimising long drives.

Too late Sohal. I have already booked Delhi - Leh flight. I did look at doing Srinagar but changed my mind because of security warnings on british foreign office site!

I do appreciate what you say re doing all the monasteries though. would be better to do something different. can anyone advise which monasteries to take out? I do want to work Pangong in so if I can free up an extra day, that would be great!

Hello Amit,
I did Ladakh in the month of July 2009 and must say Pangong was absolutely stunning also what is missing in your itenary is rafting in the Zanskar river ,we did that and trust me it was the highlight of our trip . We also went to Nubra via Khardungla and that again was great , so see if its possible for you to include these in your itinery.
Unless you are really keen on visiting the monastary's you could leave Alchi Thiksey and Hemis out and include some of the above mentioned options.
A small tip for you... do a advance booking of your seats on the flight from Delhi to Leh as the view outside the window will be one that you'll remember for a lifetime

Great advice himalayan traveller! I am not too bothered about the monasteries so am happy to leave them out. I definitely wanted to do rafting but was not sure where. how long is the drive to Zansskar from leh? can you recommend a company to book this through? Will try to squeeze in Pangong too. Did you stay overnight there? If so, can you recommend a place to stay? Good tip re the window seat too. will definitely try to book this...

Well the rafting starting point is some 20-30 minutes drive from Leh .. I dont remember the name of the agency or the place now however you can ask for the details at the hotel that you'll be staying at Leh and they should be able to help you out . The rafting takes only half a day and is an awesome experience .
Pangong is a day's trip from Leh and there are no places to stay there unless you decide to camp.We had started for Pangong from Leh and had got back by 6 PM you will have to get back soon as there is a Nala called "pagla nala" which swells up in the evening making it very difficult for vehicles to cross.
Hope this is usefull , have fun

Thanks! can anyone else offer advice re rafting? we are looking for beginner level routes for one day near Leh. what are the options? we are also going to manali. what is rafting there like?

If we take out the monasteries around Leh, maybe we will have time for a day trek there too? can people advice re options for this?
