Hi there,
I've been reading all the responses to Pid's post put in a couple of days ago with interest.
My querry is also one of timing and itinerary though I do have alot more time in India and intend to maximsie my stay in each city by taking overnight 2nd class sleeper trains, wherever possible to maximise on the dyas spent on the road (not to mention my precious rupees!)
After leaving Goa on approx 4th Jan this is my itinerary which takes me up to the second week of Feb. prior to my departure for Nepal on 16th Feb
1)Mumbai -3 nights:
2)Aurangabad (taking in Ellora&Ajanta Caves) - 2 nights
3)Udaipur- 3 nights:Chittorgarh- 1 night:
4)Bundi -I night:
5)Jodphur-2 nights;
6)Jaiselmer-4 nights;
7)Bikaner- i1night;
8)Jaipur 3 nights;
9)Agra (incl Fatehpur) 1 night;
10)Varanassi- 4 nights; 11).
11)Darjeeling 5 nights.

Have I got the time and the order of towns right, or am I doing far too much and therefore a candidate for indian overdose?
As I have noted, I will be taking night trains wherever possible. Excepting for Darjeeling, is it possible to take on trains between these towns?

Thank you awfully for your time in reading this.
Your comments will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Wallywombat
(PS I am reading a fabulous novel on India at the moment.
It's by Sarah McDonald and its titled 'Sacred Cow'... highly recommmended and extremely well written)

Looking at your itinerary it looks like you are going to have to backtrack from Bundi to Udaipur to travel on to Jodhpur. As I hate backtracking I've looked for a route which would avoid that. If you spent a day each at Ellora and Ajanta you could then take a bus to Jalgaon and from Jalgaon a train to Surat. Then from Surat a train to Kota and a bus or local train to Bundi. From there by train or bus to Chittorgarh and Udaipur and on to Jodhpur. An alternative route could be Ajanta-Bhusawal-Indore (with possibly a side trip to the ruined city of Mandu)-Ujain- Kota-Bundi.

Only you will know whether you are doing too much. The important thing is to be flexible with your itinerary and if you are feeling the pace to rest up for a day or two.

Thanks Alan,
You are right I hate having to back track (partic in India where everything moves alot slower).
Your suggestion re busing it to Jalgaon and then by train to Surat is a good one.
Given that this time of year is peak season in Rajasthan, should I think about prebooking my train journeys ... though the obvious disadvantage here is that it is locking me in and allowing no room for flexibility?
Cheers and thanks!

I tend not to pre-book except for long train journeys because I like the flexibility of changing my plans. I've found that some places don't live up to my expectations and some places exceed them. But I'm also prepared to change my mode of travel too - take a bus if I can't get on a train.

You could probably book up as far as Kota and wing it from there around Rajasthan as they're mostly shorter distances. You could also commit yourself to a date to be in Agra and book the Agra - Varanasi and Varanasi - Darjeeling stretches.

Just a suggestion - others may see things differently.
What a long strange trip it's been!

Alan's suggestion of Indore as an alternative route has a lot going for it.

Train 1057 departs Jalgaon at 06:12 and gets to Khandwa at 09:45.

Train 1093 departs Bhusaval at 07:45 and gets to Khandwa at 10:20.
----------------------------------------------------------

Train 9672A departs Khandwa at 12:35 and gets to Indore Jn (MG) at 17:45. (This train has First Class non-air con (FC))

Train 9770 departs Khandwa at 16:15 and gets to Indore Jn (MG) at 20:48; it then departs Indore at 21:10 and gets to Chittaurgarh at 06:00 the next morning. (This train has FC)
-----------------------------------------------------------

From Chittaurgarh train 9019A departs at 14:25 and gets to Bundi at 16:43. (This train gets to Kota at 18:00, departs Kota at 20:00 and gets to Delhi at 06:30 the following morning).

From Bundi train 9020A departs at 08:38 and gets to Chittaurgarh at 11:25. (This train departed Delhi at 21:40 the previous day and departed Kota at 08:00).

There are other trains between Chittaurgarh & Bundi but I do not have accurate information on them.
------------------------------------------------------------

Trains from Chittaurgarh to Udaipur are at the following times:-

Depart 04:10, arrive 08:10. (train 471)
Depart 06:40, arrive 10:00. (train 9615)
Depart 14:00, arrive 18:00. (train 9943)

Trains from Udaipur to Chittaurgarh are at the following times:-

Depart 08:20, arrive 12:20. (train 9944)
Depart 18:15, arrive 21:30. (train 9616)
Depart 19:00, arrive 23:10. (train 432)
Depart 20:50, arrive 23:45. (train 9766)

All trains between Chittaurgarh and Udaipur have FC.
------------------------------------------------------------

Udaipur to Jodhpur.

Not sure both Jaisalmer and Bikaner are a good idea, it would be a long bus journey between the two.

Jodhpur - Jaisalmer & Jaisalmer - Jaipur.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Train 4738 departs Bikaner at 20:25 and gets to Jaipur at 06:45.

Train 4737 departs Jaipur at 21:30 and gets to Bikaner at 07:05.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Train 2308 departs Jaipur at 23:20 and gets to Agra fort at 06:40.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Train 2392 departs Tundla (20km east of Agra) at 23:10 and gets to Mughal Sarai (12km from varanasi) at 07:25.

There are others, I'm just short of time at the moment.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Train 5622 departs Mughal Sarai at 18:35 and gets to New Jalpaiguri at 09:15.
-------------------------------------------------------------

All the above trains have Sleeper Class.

Fabulous information Steven, Thanks the lot!
I have been studying the LP bible and yes the route from Anjanta-Bhwawai-Indore seems to be quite interesting, convenient and less stressful in terms of connections.
In terms of reservations, I'm just going to wing it, to allow maximum flexibilty and leave myself open to the unexpected, if you know what I mean!
Cheers,
