Hello everyone. My family and I are heading to Kerala and Mumbai for work and pleasure in early August. There are four of us: me, my wife (both ~40), 10 yo daughter and 7 yo son. This is our first trip to India and first trip abroad for the kids.

We will be in Trivandrum the week of July 28 - Aug 1 for work. It is possible I will need to do a little more work in TRV on Monday, Aug 4 as well. After that, we are free to roam until Aug 16, when we fly out of Mumbai. Looking for advice on possible itinerary please. Budget is mid-range. Open to spending a little more if it makes the trip more enjoyable, but not looking for 5-star.

I was thinking we might spend a couple to few days each on a houseboat in backwaters, then go to Periyar or Idukki, then Madurai, and then fly to Mumbai. This is just my first thought, other than starting in TRV and ending in Mumbai, we are very open to what we do in the middle. I understand it is monsoon season, so we will need to be prepared for wet weather and minimal beach time.

Any recommendations on the itinerary, suggested modes of transportation, places to stay, etc are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your plan to mostly stay in Kerala and do the backwaters, periyar/Idukki and then to travel to Madurai as your final destination before heading to Mumbai is fine.

You could also consider Munnar hill station instead of Madurai which I think your kids will enjoy more but Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is also worth seeing.

You could start with a day or two in Varkala beach area which is a bit north of Trivandrum. Yes, it is monsoon time and the waters rough but Varkala resort area is enjoyable for the scenic hillside beauty even if you don't go to the beach.

After Varkala or from Trivandrum (if you don't go to Varkala) you can get to Kollam (also called Quilon) and take this tourist ferry to Alleppey which is the centre of backwater trips and boats for overnight stays.

Trains would be the best mode of transportation and you can get a train to Mumbai area from Madurai or from Eranukulam station near Kochi if you go to Munnar.

On your way to Mumbai, you could also stop in Goa for a couple of days if you can arrange some additional time. Yes, being monsoon time Goa will not be at its best but I think Goa in August in non-prime-tourism time will still be enjoyable.
