Will spend a week in Karnataka in Decemeber.

Planned as follows:

19 land in BLR 2am, bus to downtown then train to mysore
20 head to madikeri
21 head to kakkabe -> palace estate stay
22 homestay
23 head back to madikeri then train to mysore
24 mysore to bangalore in evening
25 plane depart 3am

I would be travelling alone with backpack. I dont plan to drive or hire a car/driver for long distance.

1. From Mysore to Madikeri, shall I get off at Kushalnagar for the tibet settlement en route? Or shall I go to Madikeri and drop my bag first at hotel then return to Kushalnagar for the purpose? Difficult to get on the bus at Kushalnagar for Madikeri?

2. Transport options from Madikeri to my homestay? Is taxi the only way?

3. Better to overnight in Mysore on 23rd for some more sightseeing or shall go direct to Bangalore on 23rd for walking around in Bangalore? From what I've read in forums and in LP, it seems Bangalore isn't at all attractive for spending any time.

4. I book no accommodation apart from the homestay. Will I have any difficulty getting rooms around that period of time? My budget is preferably <1000rs per night

5. In North India I used to make it clearly that I dont want any shopping en route and ensure the fare agreed upon include all parking fees blah blah blah while negotiating with auto drivers. Is it the same in the south or are they more trustworthy?

6. Need to book KSRTC bus and train tickets in advance?

Thanks!

[QUOTE=kkleung;1087892]Will spend a week in Karnataka in Decemeber.

Planned as follows:

19 land in BLR 2am, bus to downtown then train to mysore - seems fine,
20 head to madikeri and head to kakkabe the same day. nothing much in madikeri.
21 homestay
22 homestay
23 go to the tibetian place and an artifical forest called nisargdhama, they let u wash elephants there
24- back to blr
25 plane depart 3am

dont go to mysore while coming back, since you've already covered it while going..
you can take bus rides almost exclusively, but you may have to walk a little bit..

there are no vendors or con men in these places, so you can relax.
buses can be booked in advance, but there are far too many buses - you can go without booking as well

Hello,
First of all, theres a little bit of confusion regarding why your heading to mysore on your first day..If its to get a bus to madikkeri..you dont have to go till Mysore for that..You would get a Bus directly from Bangalore to Madikkeri from SATTELITE BUSTAND (Mysore Rd) in Bangalore.
Where as, Your intention is to sight see in Mysore for a day then that is perfect.Make sure you dont miss the Palace.
You can get off at Kushalnagara and visit the tibetan settlement, If its just a back pack your carrying it wont be much of a trouble seeing around. There are frequent buses from Kushalnagara to madekkeri however when I visited the place I hired a taxi (Jeep) from the place I stayed in madekkeri which took me to kushalnagara tibetan settlement and on the way some places like Nisarga Dhama and a park and in the end to Abbi falls and back home. It would cost you arnd 1000Rs. I advice you not to miss Abbi falls .
You can hire autos in madikkeri to take you to your homestay
You wouldnt have much to see in Mysore for 2 days, hence if you finish the Mysore Palace and such sites in Mysore, head to bangalore there are quiet a few sites to enjoy in and around bangalore.
You have a lot of homestays in Madikkeri, however it will be season time and hence rooms will be pretty full..but dont worry you will get accommodation, mite stretch your budget a little more.
The rikshaws and taxis are little more trustworthy than what you find in North, atleast you dont have to worry about e route shopping and parking. They might charge you a little over the meter charge(which you can bargain on) but more or less safe.
I advice you to book the buses once you get down at the stations so that you cant stick hard to you itenerary.

Hi souleagle, thanks for your hearty reply. I goto mysore the first day because its a sunday and I want to see the palace lights on at night. And I dont want to take such a long journey all the way to Madikeri the first day off plane, considering my flight is already 5 hrs.

What would you suggest for Bangalore?

Mysore on sunday is a nice plan..Well Bangalore is a city, also known as the pub city , garden city etc. There are quiet a few places worthy of visiting in Bangalore..So if you could tell me what ur interests are, I could help as I currently reside in bangalore.
Iskcon temple is worth a site if you are interested in such places. You could marvel at the Dravidian and modern style of architecture at the Vidhan Soudha(The state secretariat)
You could enjoy nature at the Cubbon Park or Lal bagh gardens[/B].You can try out your bargains at the Commercial street or stroll down in the evening at Brigade Road or even pub hop there. So its all about your interest

Thanks for your suggestions. For me, I dont like hectic city life. But its not easy to describe what I m interested. I'm interested in seeing architecture and walking in parks and gardens, spending time in coffee shops and pubs. It will be good if there is a walkable area in the city where one can leisurely wander around for an hour or two. I also like photogenic structures and scenery for I like taking photos.
