for Kedarnath, you first need to reach Gaukikund which is around 180 kms from Joshimath. further there is a 14kms hike.. it is possible if you catch early transport from joshimath..

Dear all
Even i have planned to travel from Joshimath to Gaurikund on 25th July 2011 and trek to Kedarnath on same day. Please do tell me about availability of buses or jeep on regular basis to Gaurikund and Joshimath? or do we need to make our own transportation facility?
thanks in advance

Joshimath to Gaurikund is about 110 kms. But it being the hills, you have to factor in a travelling time of at least 6 hrs, more likely 7.We tried the reverse, i.e, kedarnathji to joshimath in a day, but after the early morning start from kedar and lunch at gaurikund, we could go only upto Ukhimath that day, as it had already become dark, and the hill drivers are loath to drive in the dark (even though we had a very good driver, he said that that particular stretch is not safe after dark, especially since we were a family group).
You could do the distance in a day,if you start from joshimath really early, reach gaurikund at around 11.00, take rest and arrange for horses or dandis. But this will leave you quite exhausted (unless you are extremely fit and agile). And then you will not be able to attempt walking up to kedarnathji, not even part of the way.
If you want, you can call me at 08511916133.

Shashlavy, no chance!Even if you start at 7 from Hardwar, like we did, and that too from Rishikesh, you will get to Gaurikund only by late afternoon, say around 4.00.The drive time is around 10 to 11 hrs.from Rishikesh.

No it will not be possible for your to do that because the distance will not allow. One need to stay over night in Gaurikund or Sitapur or Guptakashi.
