The distance is around 160 kms, so expect 5-6 hrs (or more), these are mountain roads. It don't see any reason why it shouldn't be safe for women, although common precautions should be taken by anyone (Men or Women) when travelling alone.

Btw, just curious, any specific reason you are going via Joginder Nagar?

I've not been to Joginder Nagar, so don't know what the transport situation is, but I did go to Baijnath, a couple of stops before JN on the Kangra Valley Railway, and Baijnath seemed like a decent transport hub.

Just offering it as an option, hopefully other members will have much more detail.

thx vko and steve

@vko - well, i heard thats the closest train station to Manali, and since I suffer from motion sickness, wanted to avoid road transport as much as possible, thought of taking a train from amritsar to pathankot and pathankot to jogindar nagar and then a car to manali...but wow! 6-7 hours is also a lot of road travel. no way around it i guess.

cheers

the train from pathankot to jogindernagar is a narrow gauge train its rather very slow. but if you have time and want to see beautiful views on the way its a good idea. you will meet a lot of local people on the train and its probably a very nice way to know a few things which normal tourists would not know. the other option could be a bus or a car from pathankot to manali. will save you time if you are comfortable. have a nice trip.

thanks....

My new itinerary is Mum-Del-Amritsar-Dalhousie-Dharamshala-Kulu-Manali-Delhi-Mumbai

Since ur from pathankot, could you tell me, if Dalhousie is worth visiting?. or do we skip it and go straight to Dharamshala. Plans are from Dharamshala to Kulu - stopover for a night and from Kulu to Manali stopover for two nights, Manali to Delhi by volvo...and fly back to Mumbai.

I am trying to avoid taking the road route as far as I can.

Dalhousie is worth visiting provided you are not looking for a tourist crowded place.its calm and beautiful. dont forget khajjiar which is around 20 kilometers from there. you can go there in the morning and come back after spending an afternoon there.there is plenty of transport available from pathankot to dalhousie. please ask for any help if you need on this side of the earth. have a nice trip.

Doesn't look like it from your new routing - I only see road travel from Amritsar to Delhi.

Any specific reason for staying in Kullu? Considering it's only 40 km before Manali, not really worth it to change hotels so close together. If you simply want to shorten the road trip on that day, you could spend the night in Mandi instead.

I'd say it's more like 4-5hrs by car,if you want to go by bus then take any bus from J'nagar to Mandi where there are plenty of buses to Manali, unless you are going for a specific reason skip Kullu & visit Naggar & Vashisth which are both close enough to Manali for a quick excursion.KK

Help

Well, my whole itinerary has been completely changed...due to lack of time/and to avoid road travel as far as possible

My tickets are now booked for early morning flight Mum-Del on 19th Feb, plan to take the train to Chandigarh - overnight at chandigarh. Next day after some sighteeing leave by car to shimla.
Feb 21st to Feb 24th - in shimla and around
Feb 25th - back to chandigarh by car, train to delhi, flight to mum

Need some help with the below queries....Pleaseeeeee

1)I could not secure train tickets on the Paschim Express from Del to Chandigarh on feb 19th. What are my chances of getting it in talkal.
2) suggestions for 5 days in shimla
3) Will kufri have snow during that time.
4) how safe is it for 4 girls traveling alone in those parts.

Too many questions - Will appreciate any response...thanks!!

If trains are all full, just take the bus to Chandigarh. It's a just few hours.
You might also want to consider Delhi-Kalka-Shimla train, depending on availability.

1) If you're in line at an RRC at 8 am on the 17th, your chances are as good as anyone else's.

2) Plenty of info on Shimla in various threads, just do a search.

3) Maybe.

4) It's safe. Just take the usual precautions you'd take anywhere.
(Btw - if you're 4, you're not alone )
