Hello to everybody and my compliments for this rich website full of useful contributions!

I am planning a trip to India at the beginning of February. I would like to be at the Mela for the bathing of February 10th, and stay there maybe 3 days to have a better idea of the situation and the people.

Apart from that, I would like also to visit 1-2 ashrams in Rishikesh, and make a small tour to Kashmir.

I have no idea how much time it should be dedicated to this plan in order for it to be enjoyable and worthwile.

According to what I read here in different posts, it should be quite possible to do it, also with not much time available.

So, since I have the possibility to be in India for 15-20 days, I started to think that maybe I could try to investigate the option to visit also Nepal for few days of trekking, and then come back to India through Darjeeling, but I'm afraid this can be too much.

I have a multiple entry visa for India, and I would like to keep my budget within 4.000-5.000 rupees per day, everything included (I mean, international flight ticket excluded). At the Mela I am willing to camp, anywhere is possible under the screening and help of some kind of organizations (I will take with me just a light sleeping bag, no tent). Elsewhere, I would prefer a decent hotel or guesthouse.

As additional information, please consider that I don't like to visit places in a rush just to shoot some photos or for the sake of telling that I was there. When I go to a place I try to understand how people live there, and why they live in that way, and I like to observe and feel what is around me.

I have already been to India, but just to Delhi and Mumbai.

I will travel light, hopefully with 10 kg or less of gear with me. Most likely I will fly to and from Delhi.

I'm interested also to know whether it will be possible to find places in those areas with a realistically acceptable internet connection. If not, then it will be useless to bring a laptop with me.

Thank you in advance for any replies and suggestions about places to visit, time to be there, hotels/guesthouses where to rest, and any additional info.

Cheers and happy new year!
