Hi All,

Planning my first trip back to India, was born there but didn't see much of it. Going to spend approx 4 weeks there and have come up with the following itinerary. Trip will be in Jan 2010.

I am hiring a car and driver for Day2 - Day12 inclusive. There will be 4 adults. Is an Innova sufficient? Do I need a Mahindra 4wd to handle the roads, especially to Orchha/Khajuraho?

Can I please get some advice on the following points:
1)On Day 7 I spend the full day in Agra, then drive to Jaipur the next day. Am I better off spending half a day in Agra, then driving to Jaipur and using more time in another Rajasthani city?
2)I want to spen approx 5 days in Kerala. Does anyone have must do suggestions. I want to stay overnight in a houseboat, but I've been told they are infested with mosquitoes. Does anyone have experience in this?
3) has anyone been to Cape Comorin (southern-most point in India) What's the best way to get there and back?

Day 1 Leave Syd
Day 2 Arrive Delhi (10.20am)
Day 3 Delhi to Orchha (500kms, 10.5 hours drive)
Day 4 Orchha - sightseeing, then afternoon Orchha to Khajuraho (150kms, 3 hours drive)
Day 5 Khajuraho - sightseeing
Day 6 Khajuraho to Agra (400kms, 8.5 hrs drive)
Day 7 Agra - sightseeing, Taj mahal & Agra Fort
Day 8 Agra to Jaipur (via Fatehpur Sikri) (250kms, 4.5hrs drive, excluding stopover)
Day 9 Jaipur - sightseeing & shopping
Day 10 Jaipur to Jodhpur (350kms, 6 hrs drive)
Day 11 Jodhpur - sightseeing, Meherangarh Fort
Day 12 Jodhpur - Udaipur (via Ranakpur & Kumblagarh) (300kms, 6hrs drive)
Day 13 Udaipur
Day 14 Udaipur, afternoon flight to Aurangabad (14.30 - 19.35)
Day 15 Aurangabad - Ajanta
Day 16 Aurangabad - Ellora, evening flight to Bombay (19.55 - 21.00)
Day 17 Bombay
Day 18 Bombay
Day 19 Bombay
Day 20 Bombay to Cochin (flight, 08.40 - 10.40)
Day 21 Kerala
Day 22 Kerala
Day 23 Kerala
Day 24 Kerala
Day 25 Kerala - Sydney

Thanks in advance for your help.

Has a travel agent told you it's good to drive from Delhi to Orchha?

An overnight train (or flight) from Delhi to Khajuraho, then hire a taxi to Orchha, then train to Agra is a better and more time efficiant way than hiring a taxi.

Take the taxi from Agra.

Why so long in Mumbai, after all the places you'll have visited, Mumbai will not have much to offer, and don't even consider Elephanta after you've been to Ellora and Ajanta.

Try to work in an extra couple of days in Kerala.

Hi Steven,

At that time of year, I couldn't get flights from Delhi to Khajuraho at any reasonable price or timings. Decided to include it in the Rajasthan drive as it's on my 'not to be missed' list. Driving it in the loop with Agra will take a similar amount to time to taking trains.

I was born and grew in Bombay, so there are personal catch-up reasons to stay there.

Not sure how long to spend at Agra, and trying to organise basically a trek from Cohin to Cape Comorin (or Trivandrum if that's not possible) before flying out.

Thanks in advance.
