Is visiting at the end of July a stupid idea?

Hello good people of the internet

I've been planning my first trip to India: only 12 days unfortunately and the only time we have is from July 22nd - August 2nd. I had been feeling excited planning a route, but am starting now to wonder if what I wanted to do is totally unsuitable for the time of year.

My plan was to spend time in kolkata > varanasi > agra > jaipur > delhi, travelling on the sleeper trains between each place.

If the rain is as bad as people say and disrupts all my trains journeys and the weather is so unbearably hot as people say too, might I be better totally rethinking my trip and looking at other parts of India? Feeling pretty clueless and confused as to what to beleive...

I need to exit from Delhi on August 2nd no matter what as I have flights from there to kathmandu booked. I will be entering India from Myanmar (yangon) and ideally want to fly direct to my starting destination (hence kolkata being my firtst choice initially..)

Any advice much appreciated

Doable .. rain will be a positive as cleans and cools the filthy air.
Book 2A class of sleeper and 4 months in advance of arrival.
Would skip Agra/Jaipur and add Khajuraho/Orchha.

Rains will not affect trains on any of the sectors you've mentioned. It might get a little humid (especially in Varanasi) so travelling AC will be an extremely worthwhile expense on the trains.

To add to the confusion, I'd recommend dropping Jaipur and visiting Udaipur instead as it's far prettier and more peaceful. There's a convenient overnight train between Agra and Udaipur as well. Agra isn't particularly exciting, but I guess as a first-time visitor, you'd definitely want to visit the Taj...

Your programme as well as both suggestions are easily doable. Only issue as pointed out already would be hot and humid climate. You can go to all destinations as planned. Udaipur in place of Jaipur seems a better idea though.
My Foreign Trips will have to wait, There is so much to See in here in INDIA itself
