Is this too much

I have about 14 days maxium from the time I fly into Kolkata and when I fly back out of Kolkat. I arrive in Kolkata and take night train to Varanasi, after 4 nights or so, I take another train to Agra, do about two night there. Then backtracking (not quite sure how), head to New Jalpaiguri and up to Darjeeling for a few nights before heading back to Kolkate for a day or so.

I know this is packing it in, but does it seem possibly?

capt_mahajan May 26th, 2008 11:34

Too much

If I read it right

5 days in Varansi- including train time to Varanasi
3 days in Agra including travel time by train

If fly from Delhi/Bagdogra airport (3 hours from Darjeeling), and spend 2/3 days in Darjeeing, it is time to get back to Kolkata.

Like I said, too much. Possible, yes, if you take that flight. But not recommended.

tboxcar May 26th, 2008 11:37

Yes, that is what I figured, spending times in the train will kill me off time wise. Hmmm, do you recommend flying? Train seems so much better or is it? If domestic flying expensive in India?

capt_mahajan May 26th, 2008 11:39

Domestic flights are not too expensive, check www.ixigo.com for Delhi/Bagdogra (this sector may be expensive, though)

Trains are possible, but you don't have the time.

tboxcar May 26th, 2008 11:46

You are probably right, I will spend most of my time traveling. Thanks again

capt_mahajan May 26th, 2008 11:51

Knock off Agra for the next trip?

tboxcar May 26th, 2008 11:54

True, I was there 19 years ago, I am a photographer, I and just want to get some cool photos of the Taj, I guess just like everybody else? What you suppose the weather is like around June 20th in these parts of India? Even if it is raining, it won't be all day, will it?

capt_mahajan May 26th, 2008 12:47

Weather is very unpredicatable this year. Delhi and the north have been much cooler, so far.

Monsoons wouldn't really have advanced too much wherever you are going by mid June. So yes, if it rains, it shouldn't be all day.

1 Kolkata
2 K., night train to Varanasi
3,4,5 Varanasi
5 Leave for Agra at night
6,7 Agra + Fatehpur Sikri
7 Get to NJP by night train somehow
8,9,10 whatever, Darjeeling.

Back to Kal.

I think this should be doable yes, no matter how you want to turn it around, and it will obviously leave you with some days to play with. You didn't write it down all that clearly, it looked like you wanted to spend those four days in Kolkata first.

Given that Agra may be missed if time doesn't permit, I think I'd go....

Kolkata
Darjeeling
Varanasi
then either Kolkata or Agra (then fly the cheaper Delhi-Kolkata route).

That way, you can see how you feel in Varanasi before deciding to include Agra or not.

tboxcar May 27th, 2008 02:22

Hmm, that's a thought, although I already have the Kolkata Varanasi train ticket, I was in Agra in 1989, but that was before digital cameras and I do remember somethings, but not enough. A gem scam comes to mind:D

Last time I was in Delhi in June, it was arond 114F, and drizzled every afternoon (pre-monsoon) for half an hour, to ensure that the humidity was up around 99%. If you hate Miami in August, you're not going to like Northern India in June.

tboxcar May 27th, 2008 05:29

Hmm, have not ever been to Miami, but I will be coming from Manila and Bangkok where I base myself during this trip. Wow!!! 114 with drizzle, sounds kinda steamy!! Thanks
