India (Rajasthan & Kerala) & Sri Lanka in 5 weeks

Hi All,
I just wanted to get some advice regarding an itinerary for India & Sri Lanka for 5 weeks in late Dec and January.
Any advice on alternate routes or places I should miss or include will be welcome. I'd also like to take advantage of some cheap flights, especially from Raj to Kerala (not sure how easy it will be to book on short notice during peak season?).

Calcutta 1 night
Varanasi 3 nights
Khajuraho 2 nights
Orccha 2 nights
Agra 3 nights
Pushkar 3 nights
Jodphur 2 nights
Jaisalmer 4 nights
Mt Abu or Ranapkpur 2 nights
Udaipur 3 nights
>>>>> fly south....I'm guessing I will have to go to Amhedabad?
This will leave 6 days in Kerala. What do people suggest for Kerala. Mysore -Ooty -Kochi - backwaters (can skip beaches and wait till Sri Lanka). Is it best to fly to Colombo from Kochi or Trivandrum?
>>>> 6-7 days in Sri Lanka >>> flight back from Colombo to India and fly out of India from Bangalore.

*** The other option is to fly into Delhi and just see Agra, Rajahstan and Kerala and skip Calcutta, Varanassi, Khajuraho and Orccha?***

Thanks.

With respect to Rajastan, i would recommend a day or so in Jaipur to at least see the Palace of the winds. There is alot of forts in the vicinity you could see also. You could probably use less time in Agra, 1 nite potentially. Loved Pushkar. Did not make it the the rest of Rajastan, unfortunatley. If you check the site "make my trip .com" it searches all of indias low budget such as Go air etc, so you can book ahead if you are able to for really cheap one ways. I would suggest skipping Keralas beaches and doing that in SL. I flew from Truvandrum to Colombo on SL air, but Mihin Lanka flies from Trichy to colombo and is the budget airline.
Keralas highlights, the tea estates, thekkady/periyar game reserve, kochin, backwaters tour via local boat or house boat. SL beaches are much nicer and you can work your way down the coast for a few days. The Interior is stunning also. The mountain towns of Ella and Nuwara Eliya, Adams peak, Kandy, ancient city of Ponnolaruwwa Yala national park. Theres a lot to see. I have rented a car the first time around when i went on a tour. The next time i took local transport.

Thank you Saffina. As it turns out your advice is appreciated and well timed as we have put off Sri Lanka for 5 years and will be heading there in new year.

Will be passing on SL this year and heading to India, Kenya and Tanzania and Italy. Planning on going back to SL Nov 2012. It seems like a great idea to be on an island for the end of the world..... You will love it... Have a great time... If you have questions ask..
