Hi all,

Let me run this by you. This is my first trip to India, I'm travelling through India for a month on my way to Nepal, where I'll be for nearly 4 months. I'm starting off in Goa as I have a friend to visit there and then I planned to head up to Jaipur on the train, probably stopping in Mumbai for a day or two on the way. I'll spend a few days in Jaipur, stop briefly in Agra for the Taj, head over to Varanasi and then up into Nepal via Gorakhpur.

First question...how does that sound?

Second question...the mosquitos love me so I'm thinking of taking the usual anti malarials while I'm there as I see there is risk there. After that, I'm considering stopping the pills (after the appropriate time) for the rest of my trip. I can't decide if this is the right thing to do. What you think? I leave on the 2nd December so I will need to start taking them on Wednesday so need to decide.

I'm travelling alone so if anyone else is on a similar itinery, give me a shout, it'd be great to have some company.

Tom

I've had malaria only twice in 17 years, never took pills and wouldn't - besides your trip is in winter, well the northern bit anyway is not going to be a risk. Really depend if you have a reaction to pills or side affects? Otherwise, long sleeves, keep the doors closed and adopt other precautions.

If you just have a few days in the north I wouldn't find either Jaipur or Agra on my itinerary . . . maybe just that's just me . . . and its your first trip so . . . perhaps the hills, or jaisalmer and jodhpur . . . or maybe just stay in the south there is so much to see . . . hampi, rameshwaram, kerela . . . jaipur and agra are just too crowded basically, there's not much wrong with them otherwise, but as a first time, they're ridiculously hardcore indian experiences!!

what if . . . maybe . . . say . . . suppose!

Ah ok. I've really got around 3 weeks in the North. I'm going to Goa for around a week then I just planned to head North. I'm going to go to Jaipur as I have arranged to stay with someone there via couchsurfing.com and I'm heading to Agra purely to see the Taj as I hear thats a 'must see' while I'm in India. Do you think Jodphur might be a better option than Jaipur? How about Varanasi? Is that going to fit into the 'hardcore' bracket too?

Thanks for the Malaria advice Paleface. I think maybe I'll just take the pills in Goa. I don't usually take medicines so couldn't really say if I'd have a reaction with the pills or not but I don't want to take them longer than I have to. But also, as I say, insects like biting me so I'm not going to be foolish about it. Anyone else any views on what would be sensible?

i'm a couchsurfer too . . . you could surf delhi with me if you like. i know delhi is kinda inevitable

that said varanasi or benares as we know it is amazing . . . but jaipur, maybe i've been there too many times, but i hate the place, jodhpur, jaisalmer even udaipur anyday! bundi if you're into the quiet . . . chittorgarh even . . . otherwise check out eastern up, i don't know much about it, but its supposed to be the heartland!

Jaipur as Troooooon (is that One toooo many) said is busy and hardcore i suppose, but having been there so often i don't notice that. Conversely it is also one of the greatest centres of concentrated artisanship you are likely to come across, sculpture, painting, crafts, wood, that sort of thing if it's your bag.

As per nepal's immigration rules one can stay a maximum of 150 days in a visa year that begins January.

What I'm really after is to wander around a city and look at the architecture and take some pictures. I'd prefer a quieter city but have heard alot about the Pink City and it sounds cool. I don't want to be walking around somewhere that is completely jammed though. Do you think somewhere ele fits that criteria better? I'm kind of commited to jaipur now but will maybe look at somewhere else nearby. I want to be in Kathmandu at the start of January so I have until then. I was going to spend the bulk of my time in Goa, Jaipur and Varanasi.

If I end up in Delhi..I'll give you a shout!

My remedy

My remedy for mosquitoes and protecting oneself from that evil beast.

Odomos smells a lot better than what it did when I was growing up in India.

I also mixed 50/50 propositon of Detoll and Johnson's Baby Oil. Some people think you will smell like an Indian hospital but to one's suprise I didn't. It worked.

I haven't tried this but heard that Fabric Softoner sheets when rubbed on the body also acts like a repellant.

Ok, think I'll try and check out Jodphur and Jaisalmer. I might hit Delhi too as I'll be close. That couch going to be available troooon?

I'm still in Goa but heading up to Mumbai tomorrow and then on up North. I'd like to visit the caves at Ellora but it sounds like a good few days adventure to get there!

I'm enjoying India though I think its about to get a bit more manic once I leave Goa!
